Mechanic says tires are "cupping." Sorry if this is a stupid question. Never had a car with so many miles on it before.

According to Motorist Assurance Program guidelines strut performance is degraded enough that they should be replaced after just 50,000 miles. Yours have 3 times that many miles.

Additionally with yours we have a serious symptom. The type of wear pattern reported by your mechanic is frequently indicitive of worn out struts. Struts that are worn badly enough to cause that sort of wear will also reduce the handling capabilities of your vehicle and increase the distance it takes to stop, so its more than just a tire wear issue. Its a safety issue.

If you opt not to replace the struts I would recommend an inexpenisve replacement tire, because you will have to replace them frequently.

You got your moneys worth out of them, change your shocks and struts, if they are bad enough to cause tire cupping they are dangerous too.

Bad shocks or low tire pressure will cause "cupping" and at that mileage, I would agree that they are probably due for it.
