Yes, there is usually a limit.

Most universities have a 3, 4, 5, or 6 year limit. However, certain departments can have their own limits that are less than the university's timeframe. Therefore, you MUST consult your own department for this information.

Check the student handbook or ask an advisor, as this allowable break in studies varies with each school. Mine is only a max of 3 years, some may be more generous and give a max of 6 years.

It depends on the school. Some universities -- like the University of Pennsylvania -- will drop you from the program after a set time if you don't reach certain milestones on time. Others will allow you to take off as much time as you want as long as you pay them a small fee every year.
