Very good question! I believe that you know yourself best. When you do something that is out of character, you will know it and feel it. Your body will provide resistance in one form or another. You will start to question your actions and you will feel it in your "gut". As we know, people are born with different characteristics. When we do things that are natural to our character, there is no thought going into it. When we have that internal voice questioning an action, this is when we know that we are doing something out of character and not being "true to yourself".

Basically it means that you should have a set of standard and use these standard to govern the conduct of your life. More specifically, is deals with honor, trust and respect. It means that you are not governed by the standards imposed on you by others, you know what is right and Wong, good and bad and you life within these boundaries.

I think everyone is true to themselves regardless of "where they are at" on their path....we all rationalize our actions based on doing what we can with what we've got.

To REALLY be true to the essence of ones self, you need to follow your hearts desires and seek inner wisdom, know your self and strive to look for ways to understand yourself, situations, and others.

It is hard work to care to weed through life's scars etc. so once someone overcomes the power of the 'dark' parts and times, they are freed to see who they really are.

Don't be fake and act like someone else to fit in with a crowd. Just be yourself and what you believe in.

My exposure to people "being true themselves" has not always been positive.
The general concept would suggest that it means to be honest with your feelings, trust your instincts, be genuine, etc.
However, it's sometimes used as a cop-out...certain people will use this concept as a way to be selfish and not necessarily think of the greater good.
(I'm not always this bleak, lol...trust me)

Know who you are and don't make something of yourself that you aren't. Quite often we act like money and we don't have a cent. Or we act proud like we've accomplished a lot and it is our money that buys the compliments and the praises.

Revelation 3:17 says it this way
"Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with good, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked."

God clearly tells us, "without God you are nothing."

No matter how rough or disbelieving those are around you stay the course; meaning stick with your beliefs no matter what; the rest will fall into place.
