well if you dont care than dont ask, just say hi and keep walking its much better, i think by asking someone more than what you want to know can lead to an undesirable conversation

It's just a good mannered way of starting a conversation, nobody really takes the first few questions seriously, they're just treated as an ice breaker or a starter. Just smile and be polite, then the conversation gets warmed up and the topics get more personal or interesting. I don't find it rude at all. How else are you going to get things started without the 'Hi How are you today?' or 'Cold day out there isn't it?'. We all do it, and it seems to be working.

What I think is rude is when people ak a question to be polite, but make it clear that they are only asking to be polite. Like they ask you, "How are you?" Then walk away before you get done answering. Usually I assume that the person is only asking to be polite, so I just say, "Good and you?", not some long, drawn-out real answer, so they're not walking away because I am taking too long.

Yeah, I hate it when someone tries to be polite but really don't mean a thing they're saying. I think it's much more rude than not asking at all!

It is generally considered rude. Money talk is kind of on the list of topics you don't discuss in polite society, along with politics, religion and medical ickyness.

I used to work with a doctor that would enter a room asking "How are all my favorite people today?". Needless to say he didn't know anyone there. It's phoney to ask a question when you have no intention on even listening to the answer. I just say hello, if I know the person I'll say how are you.

I find it to be rude that someone would ask me how I am doing and not care. To me, these people are either being rude or nosy or both and they can be exasperating. If they ask me how I am doing I will say if you are curious only , go away but if you really care I am doing fine and how are you?

If it is so there is some conversation and you don't have anything deeper to ask, there is nothing wrong with it. But if you're asking and aren't even going to listen to the response, then yes, it's rude.

Well, it's because of the social norm. And people think they are being polite by asking.

It would depend on the situation.
But you're right in that most circumstances, I'd just say "hi" or acknowledge them and not ask how they were doing if I didn't care...
