I'm in DOS for Windows Xp recovery. I'm trying to access the C: drive folder but I can't. When the recovery console starts, it starts in C:\WINDOWS\

From what I know, all you have to do is type "Cd.." to get to the C: folder but it doesn't work. It keeps saying that "The command is not recognized...type HELP". Is there another way?

I'm trying to copy files from the Windows CD to the C: drive. The files are "ntldr" and "ntdetect.com". System won't boot without these files.

Thanks

Copying those files to your C: will not resolve the problem. They reside in a special protected part of the hard drive which you can not access. So even if you could get to the C:, copying the files would be worthless.

First check that you do not have a floppy disk in the floppy drive. That can cause the missing ntldr error, as it looks to the floppy first and can not find it.

Next, boot from the XP CD and let it start the Windows set up. Right after you do the F8 to agree, you will be offered a change to repair your Windows install. That will replace those, and other Windows systems files, without erasing any of your data. That may resolve the boot up issue.

If not, then it means the hard drive itself has gone bad, and willneed to be replaced. But there is still a chance that if you were to put that drive into a different computer as a second hard drive, you may be able to copy any of your music, pictures, videos, etc off the drive. A missing ntldr just means that it can not boot Windows. It does not mean that all the other files are missing.

Good luck....

the correct command is cd\ not jsut cd... but you dont need to be at the root of C to copy files.... you can use the copy command from anywhere and coppy files form anywhere to anywhere.... copy (From location) (to locaktion) ..without the pernthesis.. ex copy D:\ntldr C:\

You can go to SAFE MODE. While restarting the computer press F8 until a black screen appears then with the arowls go to safe mode wait to initialize and go to ADMINISTRATOR then you can copy all you want from there without starting any application. HAVE A NICE DAY :)
