I always ask how people are because I care, I know there are huge cultural differences around the world and can accept this. So when my dh American family call, I usually reply to "how are you?" with "Do you really wanna know?" My theory is why be polite, if you don't want to know, just don't ask.

Mostly I ask to be polite. I really do not care, especially if I do not know you.

I only ask people I know & care for. And I don't much like it when strangers ask me, I don't see how they consider it polite. Just a smile is enough! :))))

it depends on who I'm asking. If it's a friend, I'm asking b/c i care and if it's guests or meeting new people, I'm usually just asking to be polite and honestly when a person u don't know too well asks you "how are you" you wouldn't pour out ur problems to them even if you had one...you'd just say "fine" or "good".....wouldn't you?

Asking to be polite. It's like a greeting. I really don't want you to take it literally and start telling me about your problems.
