We bought a 2002 Taurus froma dealer. The miles are about 41K..which is good. BUT, the thing sqeals when running. My husband said the belt looks good, like new, but may need tightning or a pulley is bad. Well, the dealer "fixed" it..hah...sound came back. Took it back, now they say could be either in the transmission or motor..any car experts here?? Is this worth fixing??

sorry sweet hart.......You knew may answer in advance.

ask Your husband to remove the belt and make the engine run without the belt,if the noise go, then You know is the pulley's bearing.

You have to fix it Yourself, all the ford dealers are croocks,(my personal opinion) after all ,remember they sell Fords. and they know about cars.

If it is a loud, shrill squeal that is fairly constant, the the belt may be dragging on one of the driven parts (alternator, water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor). The one that is dragging may have bad bearings, and the only way to check right is to take the belt off and "feel" each pulley by turning it.

Another common problem is the belt tensioner pulley bearings. You normally "feel" it turning rough...it won't be so much of a "squeal", but rather an almost chattering sound sometimes...

Thedealer stopped it for a while so he proberly squirted some thing onto the belts and you could do the same I think there is a misalignement with the belt that drives the power steerining some one may have bent the idler pulley adjustment bolt and it is causing side rub on the belt ~~

my recomendation is with the engine shut off put some vasoline on the ribbed side of the serpintine belt that runs every thing. once you back out og the way start it up and see if the noise is gone. if so you probably need to get them to put a new belt on it. For some reason folks like to spray belt dressing on their belts and all that does is cuase a build up on the rubber that makes it more likely to squeal/Slip the vasoline will romove the build up. if the vasoline doesn't stop the noise you probably have a bad bearing in one of the accessories( alternator, power steering, air conditioning, or idler pulleys.)
