The telephone is important because it has enabled instant communication over any distance, from family/friends to matters of State eg Presidents of different countries able to dicuss problems. Hope this helps

Instant voice communication that is able to transmit one's emotion alongside the actual message which could never have been achieved with telegraph. (And nobody else can know what you told the listener, either.)

think of how important it is to you, you can speak with your aunt who leaves in Latvia, solve your problems instantly by calling a friend, not feeling lonely and just chat! or in a case of an emergency, like a fire, or a family member has a serious medical problem..etc
