In Catholicism, the ordinary ministers of Baptism are the bishop, the priest and the deacon.

In case of necessity, anyone, even a non-baptized person, with the required intention, can baptize, by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula:

[name], I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

All Catholic deacons, priests, and bishops are ordain through the laying on of hands of ordained Catholic bishops (the successors of the apostles). This unbroken line of Apostolic succession can be traced back to the Apostles.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) believes that their priesthood authority came directly from Jesus Christ. Members holding the priesthood can trace a "line of authority" back to Christ. Each priesthood holder who gets ordained, can trace back through the generations of all those who held the priesthood that ordained them. The LDS Church believes that Joseph Smith was ordained by Peter, James and John, who were ordained by Christ himself.

The LDS Church believes in baptism by immersion.
