BASIC RULES

1. A baseball player's age shall be the age he will be on April 30th of the current year. A softball player's age shall be the age she will be on January 1 of the current year. A player must be 5 on or before April 30th to be eligible to sign-up. There are no exceptions.
2. Each team shall furnish one adult (age 16 or older) per game to work the press box as scorekeeper or announcer. Failure to provide the required worker could result in forfeit of that game.

3. Paid officials will not be allowed to umpire in their child's league.

4. Rule clinics will be held prior to opening of the season. All managers, coaches and umpires are required to attend.

5. Any protest will require a fee of $100 which will be refunded if the protest is upheld. All protests must be made in writing. Written protests with the protest fee must be submitted to a Baseball or Softball board member within 24 hours. No judgment call by an umpire may be protested. No baseball protests will be considered if the rules of protest in the Dixie Youth or Dixie Boys Rule Book are not followed.

6. No one shall manage more than one baseball or softball team per season.

7. If for any reason whatsoever, a player cannot, or will not, take or continue his or her turn at bat when it comes their turn in the batting order, the opposing manager may select any other player (that is not on base) to take or complete his or her turn at bat. After this first time, this spot in the batting order is skipped without penalty or substitution until such time as the player returns to the batting order.

8. Any action by a batter or a runner that results in contact or near contact with a defensive player and which, in the opinion of the umpire, appears to be malicious, shall result , in the batter or runner being called out and ejected from the game. Other runners will be allowed to keep bases reached at the time of such incidence but further advancement shall not be allowed on the play.

9. The slinging of a bat in a fashion that, in the umpire's judgment, could cause injury to other players, shall result in the offensive team being warned that any further incidents by any batter shall result in that batter being called out. Such a play would be a dead ball situation and no runners shall be allowed to advance.

10. A team must field a minimum of eight (8) players. Less than eight players shall constitute a forfeit, unless a team chooses to "pickup" a player from another team in same age group. That player will bat last and play an outfield position. In the event that a team shall lose players due to any circumstances below the number of nine (9) or begin the game with eight (8) players an out shall be called every time the vacated spot in the batting order is reached.

11. Managers in all leagues should coach the children to always attempt to avoid collisions on the base path by either sliding or going around. However, a defensive player cannot block or otherwise obstruct a runner's path to a base without possession of the ball. Should an obstruction be declared by the umpire, the runner will be awarded the plate (or base). As this is a judgment call, no appeal will be made beyond the umpires.

12. League Champions will be the team with the best overall records. If two or more teams are tied with the same record, the following tie breaking rules shall apply:

A. The team with the best division record.

B. If two teams are tied with the best division record, a playoff game will be played. (Regulation tie games for the purpose of this rule shall count as 1/2 won and 1/2 lost.)

13. Parents, friends, and siblings of team members must stay behind fences. Managers, Coaches (other than Base Coaches on 1st and 3rd) and equipment must remain in dugout.

14. A baseball/softball player can be dropped from a roster for the following reasons only:

A. Disciplinary reason (derogatory remarks, causing dissension, etc.)

B. Failure to attend practice or games (after warning)

C. Suspension from league for reasons covered in the rules.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVAL IS REQUIRED TO ENFORCE THIS RULE.

15. Head-first sliding is not allowed when advancing to a base or home plate. The runner shall be called out. However, it is allowed when returning to a base. This is a judgment call by the umpire. (Exception: Senior Baseball)

16. It must be understood that when the umpire takes the field, he (or she) is in complete control. For safety and liability purposes, the rules of the A.S.A., Dixie Youth and Boys Baseball dictates umpire control and are stressed in their respective rule books.

Baseball is a sport played between two teams usually of nine players each. It is a bat-and-ball game in which a pitcher throws (pitches) a hard, fist-sized, leather-covered ball toward a batter on the opposing team. The batter attempts to hit the baseball with a tapered cylindrical bat, made of wood (as required in professional baseball) or a variety of other materials (as allowed in many nonprofessional games). A team scores runs only when batting, by advancing its players—primarily via hits—counterclockwise past a series of four markers called bases arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or "diamond." The game, played without time restriction, is structured around nine segments called innings. In each inning, both teams are given the opportunity to bat and score runs; a team's half-inning ends when three outs are recorded against that team.

Baseball is an American sport played by two teams that each have 9 players. In baseball, one team throws a small round ball called a baseball and the other team tries to hit it with a wooden stick called a (bat). Teams get points by running and touching markers on the ground called "bases".

The game is played in nine steps, called innings. In an inning, each team has one turn to bat and try to score runs worth one point. When one team bats, the other team plays defense and tries to get three players on the other team out so they can bat. The team that is playing defense always has the ball. This is different from other team sports. When the team on defense gets three players out it is their turn to hit. Then the team that was batting starts playing defense, and the team that was playing defense starts batting. After nine innings, the team that has the most runs is the winner. If the teams have the same number of runs, they play more innings until one team wins. At the start of the game, the home team pitches, while players on the visiting team bat. Only one player can bat at a time.

There are many ways to get batters and runners out. Some common ways to get them out are catching a batted ball in the air, tagging a runner, force outs, and strikeouts. When the fielding team has put out three of the batting team's players, the half-inning is over and the team in the field and the team at bat switch places.

The batting team wants to get runs. In order to get a run, a player must bat, then become a base runner, touch all the bases in order, and then touch home plate. So first, the batter wants to make other players get to home plate, or to run the bases himself. The batter tries to hit the ball between the foul lines, so that the fielding team cannot get anyone out. The pitcher tries to pitch the ball so that the batter cannot hit it well. After the batter hits the ball, if it lands outside of the foul lines, the umpire calls it a "Foul ball".

A baserunner who touches home plate after touching all previous bases in order scores a run or a home run. After the batter hits a home run, the batter and all the runners can touch all the bases and score.

all i can say is go and play and you will find out really fast if it is any thing like softball which it is it is really easy all you have to do is hit and run to first base! and you also have to catch the ball occasionaly i would advise you not to pitch or hind catch if you dont know how to play so dont worry about that part

How to play...?

With determination. With passion. With respect for the game, and the guys in the other uniforms, and your teammates (and even for the umpires, though it's okay to get pissed off at them). With love helps but isn't totally necessary. With joy. Without ever giving an inch. With fire in your belly, nails in your teeth, and dirt upon your pants.

And with heart, because you gotta have heart.
