I recently moved into an apartment. I was recently inside the apartment of my elderly neighbor, an over 70 woman who lives by herself. She was smoking a cigarette with an oxygen tube in her nose. I saw the oxygen tank nearby, but I don't know if the oxygen was turned on or not. She gets government "Section 8" to help her pay her apartment rent.
Is it illegal for her to do this, and how dangerous is it. Is there likely to be an explosion and I will die ? Can I report this situation to anyone, such as police or local health department or "Section 8 government housing" office.

It is dangerious becasue it is under pressure. It is possible for the tank to explode. I would watch out for the poeple who bring her the tanks and tell them.. They might already know that she smokes , and it just might be presserized air not O2
.. Call the local office of the aging and tell them, they can contact the right ppl for this... Police have too much other things to worry about.......

That would be dangerous. Plain and simple. SInce the oxygen is in a container, not likely to explode. I cannot imagine how she could be smoking with an oxygen tube in her nostrils. Usually they remove them if they want a cigarette. I am not kidding.

Oxygen is not flammable, but does increase the rate at which other substances burn. a cigarette in pure oxygen will immediately glow orange, causing burns and the risk of fire. there won't be any explosion, but she should be turning her tank off when she smokes. Really she shouldn't be smoking at all, but obviously that isn't going to happen. You can report her to the local department of family services (goes by many names depending on where you live) if you are worried about her safety.

I worked in the business before and I don't believe it's illegal but yes dangerous. i knew an older man who snuck his smokes into the hospital and he lit one up. He didn't die but it burnt his face and the plastic tubing melted and stuck to the inside of his nose. Don't worry about the tank, it's highly unlikely for it to explode, it would likely have to be punctured or heated to a really high temp to explode. Just leave her as she is don't make her life even more complicated than it already is.

I know how addictive smoking is. I dunno how dangerous it is for a person to smoke and be on oxygen but I do know that if she's not careful, then she could accidently cause an explosion. I do think that she should go on the patch but if she refuses, it's her business.

Highly dangerous. If she wants to be stupid and burn herself up that's one thing. However, to endanger the lives of others in the apartment complex is criminal.

Not dangerous. Oxygen does not explode or even burn. It just causes things on fire to burn faster.
