The official start of the war occured when Germany invaded Poland. This was what made England declare war on them.

Started in two parts of the world, really. First in Europe with German re-armament and rise of the Nazi party in 1930s. Germany felt the "German people" in other countries (parts of Poland, Czechsv., Austria and so on) needed to be united with Germany. German agression and expansion clashed with British and French interest, and when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 (a country which had a protection treaty with the UK and France), war broke out. Germany screwed up when they also attacked the USSR (Russia) and broke a treaty with them. The two-front war and entry of the US doomed Germany.

More or less the same thing with Japan in Asia. In the 1930s, Japan became dominated by militarist, and they started invading resource rich neighbors (China, Burma, Korea) and expanding. The US was their main threat, so they attacked the US (Pearl Harbor) in an attempt to knock out the US Pacific fleet and buy themselves a few years befor the US could stop them. They did not hit the US aircraft carriers though, and the US came back quickly, and within 1 1/2 years at the battle of Midway, turned the tide. Ultimately, the US used its resources and the atomic bomb to end the war and save lives.

Germany declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor, and the US joined the war in Europe, focusing first on Germany (with the Army) and then on Japan (with the US Marines and Navy).

This is obviously a brief answer, and I hope it gets you started...

The 2nd World War started when Britain & France declared war on Germany on 3rd September 1939, following German's invasion of Poland on 1st September.

it started when Hitler want to capture Poland. but Britain don't want that to happen and France join Britain. At 9:00 on the morning of September 3, Sir Neville Henderson, Britain's ambassador to Germany, delivered an ultimatum stating that if hostilities did not stop by 11 AM, a state of war would exist between Great Britain and Germany. Germany did not respond and at 11:15 on the morning of September 3, 1939 Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain went on the radio to announce to the British people that they were at war with Germany.

Whilst I agree that the German attack on Poland is the start, there is something else to consider.
Japan had been fighting in Manchuria since 1933 and if you follow that line of thought then 1933 could be your answer
