Go into the router setup (usually by running the CD which came with it) or by opening your browser to the router's address, and make sure that encryption is turned on (either WEP on older routers or WPA on newer ones)

This will require any machines which try to access your router to have the correct "key" in order to connect. So your machines will have the key and others are outta luck.

You can take additional measures like restricting which specific hardware MAC addresses are allowed to connect and turning off the SSID broadcast, but the most important step is to simply turn on whatever encryption your router supports.

First you need to read the documentation that you either threw away or left in the box. You did not say what kind of router you have so it is hard to give you detailed information on what to do but check out the link below for general direction.
Shutting off SSID broadcast, setting up WEP and shutting off remote administration are a good start.
Do a google search for 'securing wireless router'

You need to go to the router's configuration page, there will be a security tab that will show you how to set up a password
