I didn't dilate until I went into labor. And then my labor was under an hour. I was a 1, then a 4, then a 10 all within 30 minutes. I was 40 weeks and 1 day the day I gave birth. So at 38 weeks, I was still high and closed. It could change in an instant, so just hang in there!

there are many women who come in for inductions for postdates (usually 41 weeks + ) and are not dilated or thinned out at all, or are just thinned out. First time moms tend to thin out (efface) before they dilate, so the dilitation is less important in the beginning as is where is the head and how thinned out are you....we're looking for cervical change to indicate labor, not what the actual number (so if you come to the hospital and are having contractions and you were 3 cm in the office and are still 3cm it's not true labor yet, but if you were closed in the office and come in at 1-2 cm then you're making change and that could mean true labor).
I was 2cm at 36.5 weeks, but that's not the normal progression....I was preeclamptic and my dilitation was part of my body trying to get the baby out to cure my preeclampsia.
Many many women don't dilate early....many do dilate a little bit...early dilation isn't a sign or predictor of c-section...

With my first child I did not dilate until I was in the early stages of labor. I was in the hopital getting induced and was still only at one cm. After labor started I went from 1 to 3 really quick. My daughter was dropped to 0 station for a couple of months before I had her.
With my second I started dilating soomer, but there were other things that lead to that.

I'm 39 weeks and was just verified to be 2 cm dilated yesterday. At 38 weeks, I wasn't even dilating yet, although I was losing little pieces of my mucus plug. You might go over your due date, since the due dates doctors give us are either 2 weeks behind or 2 weeks ahead. I wouldn't worry just yet. You might not start dilating until 39 weeks like me. Good luck!

It is different for everyone. With my first I was dilating at 37-38 weeks. With my second I was closed tight and had an emergency c-section at 38 weeks. (Not due to not dilating due to an infection please don't worry about that). So it could be tomorrow that you start or it could be two weeks from now. Just relax and know that your body and your baby know when it is best for your baby to be born.

I was dialated to 2 and 100% effaced at 37 weeks. One week later, at 38 weeks, I was at 4 and went into labor the same day.

Is this your first baby? If so, this is rather common. I didn't dilate at all with my first baby.
With this one, I'm 39 weeks and only dilated to 1 cm. Apparently, this baby is going to take her time, as well.
They will probably try (if they have to induce) to insert either a cytotec or cervidil tablet in your vagina to help get things going as well as administering pitocin, via IV, to get contractions started. MOST of the time, that's enough to get things moving. It did with my first baby.
Just remember that first babies can (and usually DO) take their sweet time.
