I am 12 weeks along and I like to drink tea, especially ice tea because it has been so hot. I was thinking of switching to decaf tea so I could drink a lot of it. I have about the equivilant of 1 large glass of it over the course of a day( I drink a little bit at a time). I don't drink it everyday either. I would say I drink it about 3-4 times a week. Is it safe to drink this much, am I allowed more, or should I just drink decaf?

My doc said if I want to have a cup of tea a day that's fine. But if you can switch to decaf even better. I miss sweet tea!!!!

During my 2 previous pregnancies I had a cup or two of tea (hot) every day and I had no problems. Babies were fine.

Moderate to heavy intakes of caffeine (over 300mgs per day) are possibly associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Research so far has not been able to show any links between caffeine use (even in high doses) and birth defects in humans (although studies using animals has indicated this can happen).

Caffeine does pass from the woman's blood stream to her baby through the placenta and umbilical cord, generally within 20 to 30 minutes of the mother drinking or eating products with caffeine. The caffeine stays in the baby's system for as long as it stays in the mother's body. Caffeine can stimulate the baby to be more active while in the uterus. It can also slightly tighten (or mildly constrict) the blood vessels taking blood to the baby, possibly slightly decreasing blood flow to the baby for short periods of time. If a woman has heavy intakes of caffeine up until her baby is born, the baby may display signs of caffeine withdrawal about 24 hours after the birth. Being more unsettled and crying more than expected.

Also, be sure if you drink more caffiene to drink more water

I thought I would let you know that decaf still contains some caffeine, but probably best to ask the doctor for sure on amount. Some people still drink coffee during pregnancy, but a limited amount. And you've probably been told, water is the best choice...but sounds to me you aren't drinking that much tea to cause a problem, since you don't drink it everyday.

Personally, I only drink decaf. I get enough caffeine from chocolate and other "indulgences."

But, the books say that 3 cups of coffee is OK. Given that coffee has WAY more caffeine than tea, you're fine.

my OB told me i can have up to 5 servings of caffeine in one day, keep in mind that all doctors prescribe to different beliefs about what is and is not safe concerning caffeine consumption in pregnancy. I would discuss it with your doctor if you have one and you trust him to do his best to keep you and your baby safe. Switching to decaf couldn;t hurt either though.

You need to ask your doctor.

My doc said that it was okay to consume two cups of coffee a day for me, but your doc may have a differing opinion.

Until you have a chance to talk to him or her, drink decaf.

"Experts and studies have stated that "moderate" levels of caffeine have not been found to have a negative effect on pregnancy. The definition of "moderate" varies anywhere from 150 mg - 300 mg a day."--http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnan...

Here's a website with a list of drinks and the amount of caff. they contain. http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/caffeine.html

I drank Coke my entire pregnancy each time and it was fine. But, make sure you drink plenty of water when you drink caffeine.
