It will depend on a lot of factors including complexity of the patent application, caliber and quality of the patent lawyer used, etc.

Minimal Complexity = board game; umbrella; retractable dog leash; belt clip for cell phone; toothbrush; flashlight = $6,500 to $9,000

Moderately Complex = power hand tool; lawn mower; camera; cell phone; simple business method; microwave oven = $9,000 to $12,000

Intermediate Complexity = ride on lawn mower; video game; simple RFID devices; solar concentrator; = $12,000 to $16,000

Relatively Complex = shock absorbing prosthetic device; internet implemented business method with computer system = $16,000 to $25,000

Highly Complex = MRI scanner; PCR; telecommunication networking systems = $25,000 +

any hack lawyer can probably figure out how to patent something. The problem is that his work won't be very good and likely won't deter anyone from infringing on your patent.

If someone does infringe and you don't sue, or can't afford to sue, or lose the suit because the legal work wasn't of the best quality, you've achieved nothing at all.

A good patent law firm's work will likely run $75,000 or more. And that is just for the work in the first country. If you're commercially successful in the year after your filing, you'll want to extend the filing to most other countries, which is likely to cost another $75,000 or so.

If you don't extend the filing and a businessman in another country thinks your idea could work, he'll start a business selling your product in every country except your first filed country because you'll have zero patent rights everywhere else.

Special rules and much higher expenses apply in very sensitive fields like medicine and drugs.

File provisional patent application - USPTO fee $65 (for most inventors, assumes micro entity status)
File non-provisional patent application - USPTO fees (filing fee, search fee, etc.) about $400
Patent Issue fee - USPTO fee $450
Maintenance fee (due 3.5 years after your patent is allowed) - USPTO fee $400
Maintenance fee (due 7.5 years after your patent is allowed) - USPTO fee $900
Maintenance fee (due 11.5 years after your patent is allowed) - USPTO fee $1,850

It will take alot of time and money and it depends. My dream I have is to be an inventor but I will have to make baby steps until I can support my dream financially. I'm opening up 3 retail stores that can support my dream of being an inventor. It takes money to make money,
