Why do people believe they do not have to tip on takeout orders from a restaurant? Who do you think took your order off the phone, put it through to the kitchen, bagged up your salad, your dressing, your bread, everything extra you asked for (ketchup, sour cream,....). Then we bag it up take care of your check. All this time we are busy with other tables and now there is not tip!? CRAZY We're not asking for 20% but some kind of tip is expected at a restaurant where the waitress took your order and put it together(please remember we get payed $2 - 4 an hour) So if all you ordered was a burger, don't worry about it, if you ordered appetizers, dinners, desserts whatever..you better tip your waitress!!
BTW about half the people I serve tip on takeout orders, and they leave about 10%, depends on the order
I really want to understand now that you know how much work takeout orders require, why you would not tip??

well, one thing that I've heard people say is
How much do I tip when I don't know how the service was?
Just because you give me a bag and ring up my order doesn't mean you got the order right or included the condiments I asked for etc.
When I'm eating in the restaurant, if you got my order totally wrong it would definitely affect your tip so by tipping for a carryout order I have to assume the order is perfect yes?

Tips are not expected. I am a waitress, I know how much of a pain it can be to manage tables and takeout orders at the same time, but you aren't waiting on the person ordering take out as much as you would if they were eating in. If I did nothing but take the order, bring out the food, and ring up the check for a table, my tip would be lousy.
Takeout orders are easy, don't complain. Doing that really is only worth $2-$4 an hour.

I thought most of the places that do take out, the cashier (sometimes the manager) is the one that takes the order, not the waiter or waitress.
Now, the first person is right; then we should've have to tip everybody that does that, like McDonald's, burger king, etc.
The tip is a gratuity for the service, a way of saying thank you for your service, it's not mandatory.
I'm sorry honey but if you're not happy with what you make, then look for another job that pays you more.
The tip is not an obligation we are already paying for the food, you didn't do any extraordinary to have it ready. you didn't serve the people, you just handle them the food, now if you take it to the car; like Sonic I do tip, cause you have to get the food to me, but giving me the food in the restaurant no way.

If the order was delivered to my car, i would tip, however, with your theory, I would have to tip at burger king, Mcdonalds, any fast food...they took my order, bagged the food, and handed it to me as well. Unfortunately, take out orders are a crappy part of the job as a server, some restaurants have dedicated take out employees, so a server would not have to go through all that work.

i don't tip on take out orders, and i used to be a server.
take out orders are a fact of serving, they're going to happen. at every restaurant i've worked in the HOSTESS takes the order and then gives it to the manager who takes it from there. the only reason a server has anything to do with it is because they answered the phone or because the manager was busy. i've never been put out of my way to deal with a take out order. and if someone did tip, it went to the manager's pocket, not a servers.
BUT i do tip at car side to go places because those aren't servers they just work the to go orders. and they bring it to your car.

I believe if I can afford to buy take-out, then I can afford to tip the person (or persons) who made it.
I like to tip when someone has had to work to put the order together. That includes examples like yours. About the only time I do not is when I am somewhere like McDonald's (very rarely). But places like Subway, Jerry's, and the like, someone has to do something.
Also, BTW, 20% is very fair. What is an extra $2 on a $10 order?
We live in a very tight-wad society, in my opinion.
