The first version (1980) of the Shining was pretty good, creepy, but I wouldn't say scary. The nostalgic aspect of the movie makes it interesting. Jack Nicholson does a pretty good job at capturing the mental breakdown of Jack Torrence. The remake is a little bit longer (approx. 5 hours) and more true to the book. It is more of a psychological thriller rather than scary.
Watch the Kubrick version before you watch the remake.

The Shining is one of the scariest movies I have every seen and Jacks performance is genuinely frightening and disturbing. I'd skip the 1997 made for TV version, it is more true to the book but not nearly as scary. The Simpson's parody of The 1980 version was scarier.

If Jack Nicholson was not killed on "One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest" and live instead but became really insane and was able to escape and bury his past behind and have his own family, but the insanity has full blown into a murderous stage and the story of the "Shining" started here.

What I mean is it's a classic sample of really scary movie! The other one is "Misery".

It is scary, but the book is better.

There are 2 versions of the movie. One with Jack Nicholson that was released in the theaters. And a more recent one with Steven Webber, that was TV only, but it was 4 hours so it could go more into the details of the book.

The one with Jack Nicholson is pretty scary. You'll jump a few times. The made for TV version with Steven Weber is really good too though, and its more like the book (Stephen King actually has a cameo in it).

Depends on which version. Of course, the one with Jack is the best! Want a small preview? Watch the 30 Seconds to Mars video, The Kill. It's based on the movie.

The one aspect for me that stood out the most (besides Jack Nicholoson's performance) was the opening montage shot of scenery with an adaptation of Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" playing in the background. That snippet of music alone sets the foreboding tone of the flick and gives me chills everytime I hear it when watching the film.

It is a wonderfully scary movie. Jack Nicholson is great in it.
All work & no Play makes Jack a dull boy.

Not that scary since it's slow-paced now compared to thriller movies of today. lt's nerve-wracking to watch if Jack's character can catch up with the wife to hack her. Yikes!
