The reason for that statement is simple. Your friends are your friends. You care for them and they care for you. You know their business and they know yours as much as you reveal and vis-a-vis. You keep a network, a family, a circle that brings you comfort, joy, peace, and happiness.

Your enemies, foes, those who despise you are the ones who lay traps, who enjoy your loss and agony, who set you up to fail. These are the ones that you and would forgive if you were open to that but know that although you may forgive them there is no guarantee they'll be nice to you or even care for that matter They'll be up to some tricky devious nature to thwart you and for this reason you must know about what they do, where they do, how they do... you want to know everything about them so that you are at least 10 steps ahead of them and you can be aware and alert to look out for those traps they may set. You have to keep them close.........maybe even closer to you in theory so you can protect yourself and loved ones from them and their evil ways.

Hope that helps.

I would always keep my Friends closer than my enemies, but if I had any enemies, I sure as hell would keep them close as well, just to be prepared for what they might be up to.

The concept is used mainly to describe dealings in war, but has become a coliquilism over the years. It refers to the concept that you should be able to trust your friends and know what they are up to, but your enemies are another story. You want to keep them close so you can watch their movements and know when they may be plotting to get you so you can make your move to eliminate them first.

Because the closer your enemies are, the less they can hide from you and the better you can keep an eye on them.

Of course, if your enemy is, say, a rabid tiger or Hepatitis B, the saying could hurt more than it can help.

Your friends are trustworthy your enemies are not.

keeping them close to you means you get to keep an eye out on what they are doing. Enemies that cant be seen are generally up to something!

If a person is your enemy, you should always keep your eye on them because they could be in the process of cooking up something awful for you.

So you can keep an eye on them and know what they are doing. If your 'enemies' are close to you, it's harder for them to trick you because you know them so well.
