According to the latest intel, we're in Iraq because bin Laden (who is not Iraqi) is planning to attack locations outside of Iraq.
That's the best answer I can give you based on the information I have, which I've gotten from our President.

Saddamn hussein nationalized the Iraqi oil industry in 1973, and foreign oil companies were frozen out of developing and exploiting Iraq's oilfields.
The "Draft Hydrocarbons Law" now being debated in the Iraqi Parliament amd held up as the prime benchmark for progress by the US Congress reverses that action, and mandates that executives of multinational petroleum concerns will hold permanent seats on the Oil Council that will decide who will drill for oil and where in Iraq.
Remember Dick Cheney's top secret energy task force meetings early in his first term as Vice President? Word is that great big maps of Iraq were on the table, with oil execs standing around holding knives......
Okay, I made that part up about the knives, but it is clear that the future development of Iraqi oil reserves was on the agenda at those meetings.
Of further interest is that an amendment proposed by Senator Warner of VA that stated that the US would withdraw its military forces from Iraq if asked to by the Iraqi government was defeated last week.

So Bush and his cronies can get richer.
At least they could give us a freakin break on the cost of gas. If Bush came out tomorrow and said the price of gas will be .25 per gallon because of our occupation of Iraq, how many people would accept the war?

Are you talking about the 500+ WMDs found since 2003, or the sarin and mustard gas found by US Troops or the gas Saddam used on the Kurds that doesn't exist?

President Clinton explains Iraq strike
CLINTON: Good evening.
Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.
Their purpose is to protect the national interest of the United States, and indeed the interests of people throughout the Middle East and around the world.
Saddam Hussein must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons.etc
