I don't think he would have taken steriods because Babe Ruth didn't care enough. He was more concerned with women and partying. I'd argue that an overweight party animal nowadays wouldn't even make it to the majors. BTW, pitchers weren't nearly as good as they are today and mainly threw fastballs. Bond, MaQuire, or Sosa would've hit over 1000 jacks in 1920.

Ok, first of all, Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa would not have had 1000 HRs in Ruth's time. Pitcher's threw far more than fastballs, including several pitches that are illegal today to throw. Parks were also on average much larger than they are today (though Babe did benefit from RF in Yankee Stadium). Only Bonds has been able to hit that many, WHILE JUICED, so how would he hit that many before steroids were invented, playing part of his career in the deadball era. Heavier bats were used, with there being less of a standard with the balls (which are more corked than they were then as well) which allowed great advantage to the pitchers through waterlogged and muddied up balls that were harder to see and hit.
Ruth also benefited from only playing against white players, but you also need to remember that there were near half as many teams in his day as there are now, meaning that he played against probably the same percentage of top tier players, especially considering minorities still only make up 39.7% of the players according to MLB's 2005 report card.
Now, as to the question at hand, while Ruth is famous for being a womanizer and a drinker, but neither of those would help his playing abilities or performance. Also, as has been snidely pointed out, Ruth was not exactly known for being a physical specimen. Add onto that the problems he sometimes had with managers about his off the field antics (i.e. how they would be a detriment to his game), and I'd say you could say the Babe didn't care much about his physique.
Ruth was also well known for his love for children, which Bonds in particular isn't really known for, but rather for being a jerk. Ruth's character is pretty clean save for the drinking and womanizing.
I just find it hard to believe he would cheat, considering what he did naturally with no working out.

I do not consider that there is one greatest baseball player of all time. At the top of my list is babe ruth. but others are with him like ted williams, lou gehrig and roberto clemente. it is stupid when people just look at statistics. Barry bonds and Hank Aaron may have more home runs but the babe hit home runs when it simply wasn't done that much. Also now so many players take growth hormones and steroids. back in babe ruth's day you knew it was all skill. he had no help achieving those home runs. yes babe ruth can hit and pitch! that puts him way up on my list. i have no respect for DHs and babe ruth is a stunning example of why that rule shouldn't exist. babe ruth is so great because he may be the last pitcher to hit a lot of home runs. (but micah owings has a great bat!) Another argument i have for babe ruth is the size of the field. Since babe has retired and passed the field is constantly being cut shorter. Babe ruth had to hit the ball very hard to get it outta the park, but he did anyway. The field hank aaron played in is one of the smallest ever. It is hard to put one player above all the others in a sport that has been around for over 100 years. i couldn't even pick a top 5. babe ruth will always be remembered for giving so many little kids something to dream in or to aspire to be. Sorry for the length of my answer

Hell Yeah!
No.. Seriously though... If Babe were a player today barring the rules of time... I think he would have. Based on what we know or have been taught of the Babe's personality I could totally see him using some form of enhancement simply because of his partying nature... If he were good enough to get drafted and selected to be a Major Leager by either Boston or New York... Remember folks what the question is... who we're talking about and the teams involved. Because he partied and womanized he'd need to retain his competitive image and would need or rely on the enhancements to give him the undisclosed "edge" which would be dismissed as natural ability.
Therefore I restate vehemently.... HELL YEAH!!!

No, I doubt that Babe Ruth would take steroids because why would he, i mean he had 714 home runs without them so why bother cheating when you can do it by your self.

He's be 112, so he'd almost certainly be using oxygen and a wheelchair, and if he wanted to try to play, he'd being using anaboloc steroids legally, by prescription, since he wouldn't have the muscle strength to play otherwise.
After all, anabolic steroids have a legitimate medical purpose, and that is to assist in retaining muscle mass in various types of muscle wasting illnesses.

No, it wouldn't make sense. He hit 714 home runs without using steroids, so why risk the criminal consequences as well as the social stigma associated with their use, not to mention the potential of that little * next to your name in the statistics categories.

Yes. If he could still go out, party, booze, cavort with women, and get more muscular and stronger without any extra work, then why not?
