Martha Stewart was NOT indicted on nor convicted of insider trading. (Contrary to most of the above answerers.) She was convicted of counts of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and two counts of making false statements. That is ALL.

They made Martha the fall guy (Gal) for doing what many, many others were doing on a regular basis. Insider information has been around longer than Martha. If she had been a man it would all have blown over. Not trying to be a feminist here (although I am one) but it's a fact that guys get by with more stuff than women. YESSSSSS, I know that anyone can put a different spin on this, so please don't bother. It was such an inconsequential amount she saved that I don't know why she even risked it. However, taking care of small amounts of money is what makes millionaires.

the ONLY reason martha went to jail was for INSIDE TRADING that is when her broker told her to sell ALL of her stock and less than 48 hours later the ENTIRE stock SHE had sold WENT DOWN in cost when playing the stock market you buy low and when it goes up you sell well the fact that she bought it LOW and sold it with a HUGE profit and later falls so she made $$$$$$$$$ and everyone else lost BIG TIME the problem and controversy surrounding this case was ENRON happened FIRST ENRON did the EXACT SAMETHING but triple the amount of people were affected martha was tried first found guilty and ENRON WAS FIRST by 9 months and that is why people are upset not only that ENRON is ALL men and ALOT more money involved and the ENRON criminals have not had their trial yet at all a few hearings here and there but not in the speedy time martha went down so you figure it out good luck and take care

an insider contacted her before the prices dropped--informing her that she may want to withdraw from the exchange, she took the advice. When asked in court a series of questions, she first lied--- THEN told the truth.
