Good call. I think that's silly! I don't lose any sleep over it, but I've often wondered the same thing....there aren't any wrong opinions. The obvious mean, vulgar ones deserve it---but other than that, there's just really no reason.

I give someone a thumbs down if they are being rude, jumping to conclusions WITHOUT any background information whatsoever, or if they are just missing the point by not answering the question. Not by opinion. Opinion and personal stuff does NOT get my thumbs down. I agree with you.

Okay, I read the answers you already have, and I find I agree with all of them...(odd situation for me, I can tell you!) I think people give "thumbs down" for the same reason that they would say "no way" in a face-to-face conversation. It merely denotes a difference of opinion. (you can't count trolls and nitwits-they can't be educated) The scary/harmful/ugly have the "report" option. I think the thing to remember her on "Answers" is no one KNOWS anyone else. (Regardless of momentary rapport or lack there of.) Maybe tolerance is the key? That, and realizing that it is not personal; it can't be. I think of Thumbs up/down as merely "I agree/disagree".

I don't know...because at the same time you make your point someone else has an opinion that it deserves a thumbs down

I got a lot of thumbs down on one answer, for good reasons because my anwser was bad and wrong and possibly dangerous too if the asker had followed it.
Then it got voted as best answer, it was a bit funny:)

well, i like New York....my fvrt city....
ok...
thumbs up means..good answer. the people actually want say that ..they like the way u answer..
thumbs down means..not good answer..people don't like the way u answer..actually, i give thumbs down to that person who answer rudely..or make fun of their situations..
so thumb down is necessary ,and should be given to that person who has just wrote something wrong..u know what i'm trying to say..
may be thumbs down just make that person realise..that..they are going wrong...

I think you have to remember that some of the people in here have a four year old child's mentality.
