I have to turn off the water flow to revent the continuous flow of water into the bowl. What options do I have? I changed out the flap that automatically shuts when flushed

You may have to adjust the Shut Off Point, if the point is too high it will never totally shut off and the excess will continue to flow through the overflow tube down into the bowl.
Lower your shut off point so the water level is at least a few inches below the top of that overflow tube. Test to be sure it is shutting off entirely, if not its in that shutoff switch - might have to replace it.
I'd use food color. empty the tank, when it begins to fill color the water. if it is shutting off you should not see any color in the bowl water, if it is not shutting off after adjusting shut off point, you will still see color in the bowl.
If you are totally certain the switch is shutting off entirely, and yet it is not the water level, not the flapper, and not the switch. The only part left that it could be is a gasket holding these pars in has worn and is leaking water into the bowl.

Possible Causes:
1. Flapper
2. Water Level - overflow tube
3. Shutoff switch - not shutting off 100%
4. Mounting Parts Gaskets worn.

Toilet Leaking Into Bowl

2016-11-15 07:28:43 · answer #2 · answered by brandl 4 · 0 0

This may be caused by a leaking flush valve, allowing water to pass through the tank into the bowl. If this is the case, you will hear the toilet start filling all on it's own from time to time. This is because as the water leaks in to the bowl, the tank level drops and the toilet thinks it has been flushed, so it re-fills.If the flush valve leaks the flapper must be replaced and the seat it sits on cleaned thoroughly

Remove the tank lid and look at the overflow tube. The water level should be 1/2 to 3/4" lower than the top of the tube. Adjust the fill-valve if it is higher. Make sure the little tube that feeds the overflow tube is above the top of the tube. Otherwise it can siphon water and keep filling the bowl. If the water is not entering the bowl through the tube, lift the flapper and wipe off the surface the flapper seals to. They sometimes get calcium deposits and hold the flapper up.

The most common mistake made is to not clean the buildup off the flush valve before installing the new flapper.
Run your fingernail around the rim of it where the new flapper seals. You'll feel the buildup. I use the backside of a pocket knife blade to clean the buildup off, but a spoon works great.

Also, your ballcock may not be shutting off the running water into the overflow.

You could have back siphoning going on if the little fill tubing from the ballcock is stuck to far into the overflow, but that's getting to be less and less a problem with the newer ballcocks. Fluidmasters will do it though.

there are several things that could be causeing this...

1. is the chain for the flap allowing the flap to close fully.

2. is there air caught in the flap preventing it to close.

3. is the floater that causes the water to shut of working properly

4. is there a leak in any tubing.

I am not looking at your toilet so I cant say for sure but it could be any one of these problems so flush the toilet and take at look and see where the problem is coming from... if you figure it out and are not sure what to do send me a message ill be happy to help

With the water off, lift the flapper valve and check the condition of the seating surface. This sometimes gets cracks or someone may have scratched it and that is what's leaking. Some flapper valves you can get at the hardware store have a new seat that glues into place.

When you flush, open the tap that covers where the flap is and see if it is working porperly, that it is closing on time or if something is not letting it close.
The leak is coming through the tunel that lets fresh water run in the bowl, so flush and see what is happening in that tunnel.

Check the fill tube. My problem wasn't the flapper but the vey thin and brittle fill tube. It had a small crack at the base and was slowly leaking into the bowl from there.
