If a team has two guys that both play well competing for the QB job that only 1 guy will get, is this good or bad?

Competition in sports, especially the QB position, is a good thing, as long as it's a legit competition.

There may be "competitions" to push the veteran starter, and it is basically created by the head coach and fed to the media to publicize.

In Cleveland, it looks like a three-QB battle for the starting job and that is about legit as it gets, though Quinn obviously wasn't drafter to hold a clipboard for several years.

It depends on the guys involved and the team. If all the competitors are there to do what's best for the team, they will generally accept the results of the comp(even unfavorable results) without piping up. The alternative is....a locker room divided, though that usually isn't a problem if the winner of the comp wins games and plays well(winning makes anyone popular in the locker room.) But if the winner isn't doing so hot, especially if he's a young guy, the team is kinda old, and there's a proven vet on the bench, things tend to get ugly.

Case in point, things are much uglier if the young guy gets the nod without any comp at all. I'm a Bills fan, so I have unfortunate knowledge of QB comps. Luckily, the last one turned out for the best....

It is a bad thing because if u have 2 qb that none of them show enough leadership to be better than the other that means that u have no qb. I remember Lee Corso was taklkin about Arkansas and he said, direct quote, "If u have 3 qbs, u have no qbs"

NO.
If a team has two guys who are Starter material in the prime of their careers, it's better to part ways with one of them before there is a controversy. When a starter is named and he struggles to perform, the obvious solution is to give the other guy a shot. But when this happens it ruins the confidence and swagger of the first guy.
In the case of Cleveland where you have Frye and Quinn battling it out, you know that Quinn is going to be the guy. In my opinion the Browns should trade Frye now and get help on defense or some picks for '08. If they wait it can only mean trouble.

Yeah, it's a good thing if you look at it this way.

It forces a QB to work harder and it gives them confidence because if they end up being the starter it says "Hey, you earned it"...but it also says "Play well or you're out". So the QB will probably work his butt off just to keep his job.

And look, unless your name is Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, or Drew Brees...your job is never safe.

Its good to have a plan B at QB, but not to alternate them every week...Someone has to be the regular QB...

Well, If your a Bucs fan, where you have a three and a half quarterback controversy (Simms, Garcia, Gradkowski, and Plummer may retire) it's a great thing. One of these quarterbacks is bound to do well. Even if you have two qb's going at it, it's great to have a choice.
