I mean, why? Dogs can be cute but some of them are ugly, not very smart, they poop and piss everywhere and a dog poo is not pleasing to your eyes and your shoes. They are noisy and smelly. Don't kid yourself thinking they'd understand you when they stare at you with their big gleaming eyes because they don't, they just want their meal and go out for a run.
Some people love their dogs so much that they equate them with people or worse yet, put their dogs before their kids, spouses or friends.

Why don't people worship cats/fish/birds/ in this extent?
What makes dogs so special that they are preferred over other animals, and over people sometimes (I think the latter is a crime, because it is unnatural to abandon your own species, figuratively speaking)?

I just don't get it! Please help me understand! Thanks.

Dogs get a lot of attention, because they are one of the oldest known pets. However dogs are over hyped. what is the best pet can only be determined by the owner, like for me it is my pet monkey. Dogs are like cars some people can't live without them however if they had to they could make due without them.

Yes, you don't get it ... let me help ...

"Some" of every animal is ugly. Some people are ugly.

They do not poop and piss everywhere ... they're usually house trained ... another reason that they're great pets.

And they usually don't just want their meal and then go out for a run ... they usually prefer to be by your side ... good or bad.

Dogs are very loyal and faithful. They protect the family. I can sleep well at night knowing that my dog is in the house. I have complete confidence that my dog would die to protect myself and my family. They are also very protective of my children. When we are outside, my dog does not let them out of her sight.

Unlike fish ... they have a personality. Some dogs are shy, some outgoing, some laidback, some hiper, some loving, some stubborn .. and personalities are very obvious with dogs. They have likes and dislikes. They can be scared during storms and brave during threats.

They can be very very obedient. If I snap my fingers, it could mean 20 different things ... but somehow my dog knows exactly what I want at that time.

They cry when scared or sad; the bark when threatned; they wag their tails when happy.

They grow up with the family. If you have a loyal loving friend who never lets you down, never disappoints you right by your side for 20 years ... from childhood into adulthood ... and you know that there is nothing that dog wants more than to be with you ... you get a little attached. Dog or not.

Not to mention - how many endless stories are there of people being saved by dogs?
My father always tells the story of his dog (from childhood growing up) was with him when he was 6 years old and got lost in the woods. The dog did not leave his side for hours and hours ... sat right there. And he wasn't scared because he knew that nothing would hurt him with his dog there.

I feel sorry for you never having a good dog in your life.

You have obviously missed out.

Well not everyone loves dogs MORE. I know people that loves, say, cats or horses more. Ever heard of how people are "cat people" or how they're "dog people"?
And people do the same crazy things with cats & other animals. I think animals (pets) understand you to some point because they've been around you & know what your actions or words will result in.

Dogs are loyal and will often go to extremes to protect their owner or property, they can also provide companionship, not that it can replace human comanionship but it's still something. Of course so can a cat. Some people just prefer dogs over other animals.

It's really pretty easy to understand. People need to be needed. Dogs are needy. Dogs are NOT independant like cats/fish/birds. Dogs have to be loved, they have to be attended to and in return they give unconditional love back. Ergo, humans get what they need (but most don't know that they need this) Humans need love and humans need to be needed, to think that they matter and are making a difference in the life of '?'. This '?' happens to easily be a dog. Personally, I like dogs better than I like most people. They are more honest.

Because dogs understand their master's personality and emotions. When you're sad, they are a comfort and when happy, they get playful w/tail wagging etc. My poodle does this. She's so smart that when I'm getting her to do tricks for treats, she can guess what command I'll give her next and just do it. Works about 75% of the time, I guess.

I think the main reason is that most dogs, once they are accustomed to you and know you aren't going to hurt them, are extremely loyal, always friendly towards you, and will always seem excited and happy to see you. In other words, you can depend on their behavior being consistent, which is completely opposite of cats.

Dogs have been domesticated for over 10,000 years as companions. It's no small wonder that they would be pleasing to people.

Dogs are the most loyal and loving..and forgiving. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a parakeet. Even one of our cats (siamese mix) thinks he is a dog. he licks me and loves on us..so cute.
