NO. The server is the one who has to deal with all the cheap, irate idiots who would rather complain about everything. They have to get the food out and then deal with the customer who decides something is wrong with it. The server then has to take it back to the chef who gets pissed at the server.

So NO way should the chef be tipped instead of the server. Unless the chefs want to make 2.15 and work for tips and let the server make the chef's wage!

This depends on the restaurant... IN many of the top rated eating places for causal to formal eating; the customer does always see or even get to see the chef/ cooking staff; also the chef is paid a salary and does not depend on tips So the wait staff must depends upon tips in addition a regular wage. Check the reviews on restaurants on Yahoo and you will many comments on the service BUT seldom on meeting the chef must less tipping them

Sometimes, but some servers tip out the kitchen at the end of the night ..so they might already be getting something.

Best thing to do for a chef is tell your server "My compliments to the chef." they love that.

You never see the chef. It's the waiter who's responsible of bringing the food on your table & not on your nice clothes or the one who is polite enough so that you go back.

The chef gets paid a whole lot more, besides they brought it to you while it was still hot and enjoyable to eat,and they actually have to interact with you if there's something wrong or you have a complaint. They have to hustle and most resturants can pay them less than minimum wage just because they get tipped.

Of course not. It's the waiter who's providing SERVICE -- making sure everythng's to your liking, bringing your food in a timely manner, offering recommendations, etc.

If the food was excellent but the service was horrible, yes.
If the food was horrible but the service was excellent, no.
If they were both excellent, you should tip them both.
If they were both horrible, you shouldn't tip at all.
