If I am sick during the week, or on vacation, there WILL be someone who can feed it regularly throughout the week. I'm just wondering if it's ok if it's not fed after 5pm on Friday, until I get back to work at 8am on Monday.

bettas will do fine with no food over the weekend.
i've left mine up to 4 days with no losses.

avoid those holiday blocks, the fish rarely eat them and they just muck up the water. and don't feed your fish loads on the friday, you don't want him to be bloated, get constipated over the weekend from eating too much pellet food, and die from overfeeding instead!

You probably have him in one of those little betta bowls and there for no he is not ok. He might still be alive but he will not be happy.

A betta can live in a small tank but would like something larger then a gallon if you even give him that. It should be at the very least a ten gallon tank, and he should have gravel as well as a heater, tank lamp for durring the day if he's not by a window, a filter AND a bubble maker (some people don't understand that a filter is very different from bubbles).

Your betta should be fed live or frozen brine shrimp or blood worms as this will help him live for around five or more years.

He should also have another fish in there maybe a swordtail or someone else who's a calm fish. Bettas will only fight with other males and only if they don't have enough room, I currently have four male bettas and six females as well as their eggs and fry in a 250 gallon pond outside ( with a heater, filter, and water fall for air) and they never get into fights mostly because they have enough room as I have seen the males swim in small schools and not care in the slightest.

Please make sure your betta has all of the above, you will never notice it but the office gets cold at night when the heat gets turned off and the lights go off the water temp will drop from room temp (already to cold for him) to cold night temp. Water should be above 72 and below 80, and remeber the water is always colder then air and even more so in a small tank.

Lastly his tank should be cleaned once a week, most people don't understand how to do this and they simply empty out all water and start new, this is the worst thing you can do to your fish.

You only have to change half the water, as well as clean the gravel, add new water that is the same temp as what's in there and use drops in the water to make it safe for him. Here's a great site for info on fish tanks and how to keep your fish alive for a long time. Most fish can live far more then 5 years yet most bettas only live for a few months... how sad.

All of the articles are good but I would say you need to take a look at the Nitrogen Cycle article, as well as buying new fish, and the most important Aquarium Basics is a must read for someone who has no clue.

Sure, not a problem at all. A fish will do just fine on that feeding schedule. Be sure to turn the lights out at night and over the week ends to prevent excess algae growth though.

Here's what some people fail to realize:

Bettas and other fish can go weeks without food, if starting healthy, with no ill effects at all. 2 days is really, truly nothing for them. If you don't believe it, do some research on how cold blooded creatures work.

Those 'time release' blocks are almost all filler and no nutrition, they pollute the water and provide almost nothing for the fish. People who rely on these are really not feeding their fish while away, though their minds might be more at ease for it.

Don't overfeed our fish on friday to 'make up for it'. This will just cause the fish to poop more and dirty his bowl more while you are gone. Just feed him normally.

Yeah he will be fine. Fish can go days without eating. I have a 37 gallon tank with 30 fish in it and wen out of town for a week and didn't lose a single fish.

He should be fine. I had one, when I was in college, and when my roommate and I both went home on weekends, there was no one to feed the fish. He was fine. I usually just fed him an extra pellet before I left.

Your fish will be fine, but he will get hungry over two days of not being fed. Most aquarium stores will have a pellet that you can put in the water, that gradually dissolves and releases food. Perhaps you can look into getting a few for him for the weekends when you are away.

If I were you, I would bring the fish with you in the bowl. If you are on vacation, I would personally let someone else feed him/ her while you are away.

I would suggest a automatic feeder. For the lighting I would suggest you put the light on a small appliance timer. Flakes or Betta pellets and an assortment of freeze dried foods would work best for you

Its not the best but it will be fine, i recommend feeding them plenty on Friday, and making sure they ate it all and that the tank is fine on monday.
