Journalists generally put a lot of effort into decisions of this nature, and I would trust them with this one.

Should ALL news of American deaths be held from the public until the military decides to notify the press that they have completed their family notification ?
Would this not muzzle the press from performing their duty of keeping the public knowledgeable enough to self-govern?

No... but should the media wait until the military informs them that the next of kin has been notified and the story is no longer news worthy

No.

The family should be notified first and foremost. In most instances I would support the family having the decision whether to release any info. or not to the press.

Since when does the media care about people? I answered a question earlier about the media only caring about money, and you should have seen the Liberal response to my answer!

Can't have it both ways, Liberals. In fact, your first answerer, asked the question. Here, take a look: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ap1JhG.sSIvXdnQismnCHnLty6IX?qid=20070523061652AA4oxzu&show=7#profile-info-d8466323a6d9157fa7ad5f14197407f1aa

I agree. Now every military family will be on edge wondering if it was their son and daughter that was found before the military even notifies the correct family.

no the family should be told before anyone else..if these poeple would put theirselves in the same situation, what would they rather happen...these families suffer enough they do not need to hear from the media

They shouldn't do it before the family has been notified. I don't think the military is obligated to ever release his name.
