I would have left and never went back. I would have told my friends never to go back. And I probably would have written a letter to the owner protesting, and perhaps have sent that along to the newspaper, too. Would it have made any difference? Probably not then, though these days it would cause a great controversy that would negatively affect that restaurant. That said, just about anything else beyond that would not have been worth the stress involved. It was probably best to just move on, but obviously this had an enormous effect on you if you are bringing it up here. It is shameful the way soldiers were treated by some people then, or even now on those occasions where people cannot separate their politics from their ethical duty as citizens. Don't have to support the war. You DO have to support your troops. They do an impressive and important job, and they deserve our respect.

Sadly, it comes with the job, and also during the 70`s, the West was gripped by strong anti-war sentiments. The waitress was no doubt reacting to the `whole` war machine and not you as an individual. Yours is to obey orders, civilians can feel and say whatever they like, and in all fairness, Vietnam was hugely unpopular with the "conscript` generation. "Hell No, we wont go", was I believe one of the anti-war slogans; so loud, we heard it in England ! As for the waitress, surely she was violating your civil rights. Whatever; who takes any notice of waitresses ?

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for going the extra mile for the rest of us. She was a stupid person who didn't know better and didn't give any thought to what you hadbeen through. I am sorry that it seems to still be bothering you. Try to let it go. My stepfather was a POW in WW11 and in Korea. He never let things go and it hurt him.Enjoy now and let the past be the past. She has probably seen the era of her ways over the years.
