I have Bellsouth DSL. The service is great, but the speed is not. My friend, who only lives a couple blocks from my house, has 3 times the speed I have and he has the same service, same DSL package. What could be causing mine to be slower than his?

you should contact your DSL provider, they should fix it, because there is nothing you can do with it, its about the physical connection from you up to your base station

goodluck!!!

Bellsouth's tech support number is 1.877.737.2478. You should give them a call and have them take a look at your account. There are several speeds of DSL service. It is concievable that you may not have the one you think you should. If the problem does lie on the end of Bellsouth (now the New AT&T) the problem should be able to be resolved very quickly and simply.

The problem could also stem from you hardware. Find out what the system credentials of your friends machine and modem are and line them up against your own.

DSL lines are actually subject to physical distance. What I mean is, the farther you are away from the servers, the slower your connection is going to be. That is why your friend is getting faster internet: he must be closer to the servers.

your computer also plays a role in internet speed. If you have an old, slow computer it won't matter what sort of internet connection you have; it will still be slow.

The DSL lines could also be falling apart near your house. Call your dsl provider and ask them to check/maintain the lines.

CORRECT ANSWER: On a 1.5Mbps connection, 187.5 KB/s is the max. If you got anything over 200KB/s, you're getting more than you paid for. To understand that, first you have to learn what "Mbps" stands for. It stands for "megabits per second". That's not the same as "megabytes per second". There's a big difference. Network speeds are always in bits, and there are 8 bits in one byte. So a 1.5Mbps connection is really 1500 kilobits per second. I divided that number by 8 to convert it to KB/s, which is 187.5 As for the 20KB/s download speed, well, the problem there is likely not you. It could be the site. Keep in mind that not every site out there is going to behave the same. Some are a shorter distance and smaller number of hope away from you. Others have slow upload speeds. Whatever the case, you should pay more attention to the max speed rated at that speedtest site you went to.

Your line might be dirty...call Bellsouth and have them come and clean your lines. That's what happened to me...it was slow and kept disconnecting me.

It could be caused by distance.
