The american student I am raising is very proficient in reading and writing.

We just need to be parents, it is as simple as that.

Illegals come here and for the most part don't care to learn english. Americans can still communicate effectively with each other with slang and other forms (creole for example). We should also take into account that english wasn't english in the beginning. Has anyone looked at the wording in the "King James" version of the "Holy Bible"? It's in english but very hard to follow. English will continue to change as we adapt words such as "bling" and "ice" into different meanings. Then again, I don't know of too many people that need to write an essay to excel in their respective professions.
So dawg, juss try to keep it real and don't trip yo...naw wha I'm sayin'? Ha ha, I just had to throw that in there :)

colloquialisms are still a part of our language, and although I realize that not every student uses language properly, using colloquialisms ot demonstrate voice is very much acceptable at both college and high school level. Also, I do not think the biggest problem with illegals is whether or not they speak english. And you NEVER end a sentence with an adverb or parenthetical expression.
EDIT:? WTF? You asked nothing about a job, why are you trying to ask a different question now? You asked about language, and there you go. If you want to talk jobs, let's talk about the spring crops in MI being tilled under because the migrants are too scared to come back and pick them. You don;t have to speak english to pick a strawberry. you are all over the place on this one. Oh, and I thought we were talkning about illegal immigrants, not the competitiveness internationally of our students. Our students ARE better educated than the illegals coming in. You make no sense.

Well, don't you think if there were more funds available for the school system, things might be just a bit better? There are 12 million illegal immigrants in this country. We pay taxes, part of those tax dollars go to the public school system. Don't you think everyone should contribute who takes advantage of those dollars. I sent my children to private school for that very reason. Still contributed to the public school system, though.

By the way, not all students are ignorant and illiterate as you espouse.

There is no Hypocrisy. Illegal aliens must go to ensure the integrity and safety of our nation.
As far as the language problem, Illegal aliens have caused a lot of this. To be a teacher in Miami Florida, it is almost a prerequisite to speak Spanish. There are others as well with their own language barriers. It has almost gotten to the point of leaving the American, English speaking student behind because of trying to pacify illegals that want our freedom, our country, our benefits, but not our language.
If you can't speak or understand English you should not be allowed to become a citizen. And all illegal aliens should be immediately deported. PERIOD.

We can go on about illegals because...oh I don't know...they're here ILLEGALLY. Every generation has their catch phrases that sound off the wall to the older generations. I was a teenager in the 70's and we had ours too. Our education system failing our students by letting them pass class without basic skills is an education problem, not an illegal alien problem.

I'm sick to death of seeing excuses made for those who are here illegally. I assume this is about the fact that so many of them don't bother to learn English and think we are obligated somehow to reward their laziness with forced bilingual options. Why is it that only in America do we provide such conveniences? I can guarantee you that if I moved to say, France, they'd think it was my own tough luck and stupidity if I didn't bother to learn French and had the opinion they should accommodate me by providing English options for everything from taking classes to phone options for paying my bills.

Your logic is flawd in way....you can't use slang as an example of how our english is flawed...because every region in every language has its slang terms....ANY LANGUAGE....look at south america, mexico, and Spain....all speak mostly spanish but very different spanish with different slang and regional terms....English is the same way....What we get on about illegals not knowing english is that at least those kids can go to the store get food and be able to communicate to the clerk....there is no reason we should have to print signs and menus in two languages, if you want to live here, at least be able to communicate in that language.

A second thing is one has nothing to do with the other....Illegals are just that, illegal....they broke the law, send them home period....as far as the students being behind..yes, but its not the language, its the school system, the parents, and the gov. not the language......

First, clean your own house. There at at least ten mistakes in your question and details.

That said, there is no conflict in complaining about illegal immigrants to the exclusion of poor English skills among American students. There is no connection, and it's not hypocritical.

This is the same sort of argument that favors the police letting all traffic speeders go free until all the burglars are caught. No, you catch what you can, when you can.

Two seperate issues. One thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Unless, of course, you blame the lack of education funding for American students on costly social support for illegal immigrants. Most illegal immigrants can't read or write either.

How can we go on about American Idol when a million african kids will die this year from preventable diseases? We talk endlessly about 30 some-odd kids at a school who got shot up, when that many get killed on an average day in Baghdad.

It's 'cuz we live in our own little world, it's the only way we can do the things we do and still feel good about ourselves.
