Volume One comes to a close with this season finale.
Monday night's season finale of Heroes had a fantastic moment when all the major players we've been following for the last 22 episodes found themselves in the same location fighting together for the future of the city, if not the world. But this same moment, the final battle scene, was also the episode's biggest letdown after a season full of intense, action-packed hours that were all building to this encounter. In fact, the entire episode, while great in parts, was far too underwhelming, especially considering this was the season finale.
Last week's episode gave us a lot of meaningful action and incredible pacing which we felt worked great as a setup to this finale. Unfortunately, much of this episode was spent continuing that buildup, but without the same great intensity. The hour dragged. Sylar painting in the loft, Niki trying to save her family, Angela Petrelli championing the explosion, Peter being too afraid to work alone-- we've seen all this before and nothing entirely new or unexpected happened with these storylines.
That's not to say the episode was devoid of any memorable scenes. Watching Claire realize she doesn't belong with Angela and Nathan ("I already have a family.") was a powerful scene, incredibly punctuated with the cheerleader's crashing leap out the window to the pavement several stories below. And nothing in this episode could beat the moving and joy-filled conversation between Hiro and Ando as Hiro was preparing to leave his friend to return to New York and meet his fate. The pair remained the most affecting duo of the series throughout this first season and we hope their paths cross again in the future.
But it was the final confrontation that left us stunned. Instead of the big battle we've been anticipating, the melee turned out to be quite anticlimactic. There were moments we thought it was going to get huge-- like when Niki clobbered Sylar with the parking meter-- only to have it remain sort of a one-note duel-- like when Peter told Niki he had it handled. Hiro's sudden appearance and lightening quick stabbing was, well, lightening quick. No sooner had he done it then he was gone. Nathan's sudden change of heart, swooping in to save the day, came off rather cheesy and clichéd and robbed us of all the dark storyline possibilities of future episodes. Oh, well, it was still cool to see him fly.
We're torn when it comes to the allusion that Sylar is probably still alive. The visual reveal of the blood tracking to the manhole cover did cause a sharp gasp, but the more time we've spent with the idea, the less we like it. Is there really more to be explored with Sylar? He seemed to effectively serve his purpose this season, and his death would have meant more to other characters' development, especially Hiro, then having him survive to be fought another day. Still, it is fun to have a bad guy to root against, so we'll remain hopeful that the Heroes creative team has a well thought out reason for keeping him alive.
As finales go, "How To Stop An Exploding Man" succeeded in bringing the Volume One storyline to a close, (as anticlimactic as it may have been), but did little to get us excited for Volume Two. The "cliffhanger" showing Hiro in 1600's Japan was interesting but not entirely surprising since this time period's significance has often been referenced in the show. What does have us a bit excited for next season was Molly Walker's unexpected reference to a person even more terrifying than her boogeyman Sylar. With terror in her eyes, Molly breathlessly stated, "When I think about him… he can see me." It's vague, to be sure, but our interest is piqued.
Heroes Season 2 will be coming in September.

I loved it, thought it was a great ending. I'm holding a candle for Peter and Nathan that somehow they made it
I think the person Molly doesn't like seeing is someone we know already, but we haven't figured out who it is yet. I'm gonna guess it might not be a guy...

I loved it, I can't wait to see the new season. I've no idea who this new 'bad guy' is, I wonder if Linderman is really dead?
Do you think Peter & nathan survived?
