A great and successful president is a tough thing to be - many people think Nixon was a great president, but I would not define him as "successful". He was great on foreign policy and ended the Vietnam war, but Watergate nearly destroyed his legacy.
My choices would be:
1. Intelligent and well-traveled.
2. Sensibly compassionate, with a humanity and heart for ALL Americans, not just those of his/her ilk.
3. Interested in hearing what the American people are experiencing in their daily lives.
4. Family-oriented (married or single) person who puts education and health care far above purchasing more and more weapons, which we already have plenty of.
5. Willing to work with both sides of the aisle, and understand the (pre-Bush) Constitution.
6. Take most of Bush's qualities (dumb, incoherent speech, never traveled outside USA, chicken-hawk, sleepy headed, foggy-brained, lazy, easily mis-led, etc.) and invert them, and you'd have a pretty decent person...

1. The ability to tell lobbyists and special interest groups to get bent.
2. The ability to understand and correctly interpret the constitution even if they don't agree with or support parts of it.
3. The ability to tell the American people the truth instead of trying to either shelter them from the rest of the world, or scare them into being semi-patriotic
4. The ability to work in a bi-partisan government, taking into consideration the big picture, and not just the views, opinions, and stances of the their own party.
5. No political background...We need someone who isn't caught up with the rest of the mess that is our current political system.

1. Being vile and abusive.
2. Raising trashy law breaking children
3. Eagerly sending troops to their deaths but going AWOL to avoid being in a foreign war.
4. Go on vacation all of time.
5. Regularly getting drunk and snorting coke, but hiding that from the public with loyal sycophnats.
Those are the 5 reasons I can come up with for why Bush is a great President.

Here's what I would say
1. Charisma; well spoken and well portrayed
2. Vision; a direction that the country should head
3. Honesty; scandals might be the media's favorite, but they kill the American image
4. Patriotism; only a true American with American ideals should lead out country
5. Intelligence; we can't have a president make up words in his speeches or anything like that, now can we?

One who understands the difference between passion for excellence and passion for power.
One who is consistently teachable.
One who is always willing to step aside rather than compromise the country.
One who has great integrity (wholeness, soundness) and assumes the role of keeper of ethics, not self-promotion or self-aggrandizement.
One who is always ready to provide the tools necessary for achieving the goals of the nation, and who is motivated about guarding its well-being.

extremely hardworking
attentive, doesn't sleep on certain areas like foriegn, national affairs
smart and intelligent (maybe think like a buisnessman on spending saving money and the economy for the national/federal benefit)
family man (family of his own) loves children and strives to provide influence for the young american
sticks to his guns.
I would personally rather have a president prove himself through his actions instead of his words on televisions
