The Velvet Underground
This is an over-simplification, I know, but VU had better songs, the Doors were a harder-hitting band. Sound-wise, it's really a matter of taste, but I'll go with VU every time. Lou Reed and Jim Morrison could both be kinda pretentious at times, but, to me,Morrison usually came off as a buffoonish blowhard with nothing to say. I really love Robbie Krieger's playing, and Densmore is a great, underrated drummer, but The Velvets are just easier to swallow.

Tough call. I think the Doors were better musicians but the Velvets were more creative. Both could be over-indulgent, but, as much as I love "The Doors" and "L.A. Woman", I'll take the VU's debut album over anything the Doors did.

I prefer The Doors because they have elements of rock and blues, and can be upbeat as well as dark. I find The Velvet's more dark, so I only want to listen to them sometimes.
From a DJ point of view The Doors always go down better.

It says Doors here, as well.
VU was too dark and inaccessible for most people, hence the greater commercial success of the Doors.
Stronger than Dirt.
