Well, fellow Republicans, Bush won. He called Congress' bluff. They said they would not pass a bill unless it had a withdrawal date, and Bush didn't flinch.
He knew that funding the troops is more important than telling our enemy our plans.
He knew that anyone in Congress who would keep funding from the troops, for any reason, would have committed political suicide. Don't get me wrong, he would be committing political suicide as well, but he is done with politics in the next two years. The members of Congress are not.

This was the final showdown. Bush reached for his sidearm, and Pelosi flinched. She showed that getting re-elected was more important that doing what they put her there for. Remember, she was put there to end the war, correct?

But no matter who lost, the troops won. They got their funding.
Plus, it has a warning, albeit non-binding, that Baghdad needs to get their act together if they want the money.

So, did we win?

He won for three months. Republicans are going to start pulling away from Bush in September if they don't see results, as they told him when they met with him. if 16 Republicans change their stance, the Congress will be able to override Bush's veto. Bush will get his money for now, but had better show some results in the next three months.

Not exactly, no. Congress knew they couldn't get a timetable through, the whole thing was just a stunt to show an /attempt/ at getting the troops out, and an attempt to push some of the blame for the eventually loss of the war on Bush.

It wasn't very successful, but I wouldn't call it a clear victory for Bush.

It must be disapointing for those who thought they were voting Democrats into power to END the war. De-funding is still an option, though. All Congress has to do is fail to create a funding bill, and they can end the war. It's not like /failing/ to produce a bill is something they haven't done before.

Pelosi said she probably won't vote for the bill.. but anyway. Our Congress is already formulating the war funding plans that will come up this fall.. this plan is only short term and will be passed only because it will take more time to get the plan they want passed.. and the troops shouldn't suffer because of Bush's bull headedness. I'm glad at least Congress is Moral and Ethical enough to place the troops before their ego.

As for win and lose Only losers play chess one move at a time.

This is just what was predicted a couple months ago.

If Bush has any sense he will let the budget come to him and then veto it. Dems want him to overturn the Minimum wage as a tool for the 2008 election. The current budget has language that will force the Wage issue into the Courts.

Plus remember last year they never go a budget but ran the Nation on Emergency spending bills.

They are all lyers Red &Blue

Go Team Bush Go

Yup.... Good ole' Pelosi and her ilk are just worried about getting and staying elected. They literally lied to the American people before the election to get into power. Since then, exactly what have they done? Heck, the approval rating of Congress is lower than the Presidents! (the left love to throw out approval rating numbers so I though I would too).

Anyway... This country needs to get behind our troops and this war on terror. We need to shore up our boarders... get rid of the illegals already here... continue to fight terror and rogue states around the world.

Actually, Bush said he would not allow a bill to pass with a withdraw date. The democrats backed away from the timetable because they knew it wasn't going to happen without the votes to over-ride the veto.

You're right. What else were they to do? Take the blame for the troops not getting paid? Certainly Bush would not be held accountable.
