My brother wants me to buy him a sword for his birtday, it cost about 20 dollars, and I asked him why but he just says that they are cool. What are reasons as to why other people would want to buy a sword? I'm curious.

They are part of our history our ancestors could have wielded them. Of course they make great conversation pieces. Why do people collect beanie babies? Why do people collect baseball cards? There is always something there that peaks your interest and the thoughts of a knight riding to battle and fighting always gains attention. I collect antique swords and modern functional reproductions. I probably have around 13 or so total.
I do medieval reenacting so some of mine are blunted for combat, however some are sharp too. Now make sure your brother knows that a 20 dollar sword is ONLY meant to be hung on the wall and not to be swung around. You always get what you pay for and anything under $100 is usually dangerous when it is taken off the wall.

Why do people buy a gun? Some collect them, some hunt with them and some keep them for protection. Same thing with a sword but not for hunting. Toshishiro Obata makes the best swords. He is better known as the bald guy who was Shredder's number one in the TMNT movies. He's a very good martial artist for real and makes swords that sell in the 1,000s of dollars. It takes many cycles of tempering and can slice a row of nails set in a tree without marring.

In my case, I just like swords and buy them for display only. It is a difficult thing to explain to someone why a person likes one item or another. I mount my swords on the wall and just enjoy having them around. I think that is true with anything anyone collects. And, BTW, $20 is a very small amount to pay for a sword.

My first sword was my Navy Officer's sword... it was more than $20... it was $400 !! I only wore it twice a year, but it hangs on my wall to this day.

I later purchased "Sting" from the "Lord of the Rings" just as a silly thing to display.

Swords are, an important part of the history, and some people just like war. You can't use them, but they are pretty collectibles.

richard collected some while he visited spain, they were plentiful and cheap back then, they look cool, if you are in sca you wear them for looks but all the fighting is done with cardboard ones covered with duct tape, I had a couple of swords myself when i was bellydancing, because there are dances that require you to balance a sword on your head.

I've got both decorative ones and fighting ones. The decorative ones just get hung on the wall because they look nice and add a bit of character to the room. The fighting ones are blunt and are used in western martial arts, specifically mediaeval swordplay.
And yeah, I think they look cool too.
