It's not much better in Canada. There was a story in yesterday's paper about a guy who had part of his skull removed after an accident to relieve pressure on his brain. One year later, he's still on a wait-list to get his skull fixed. He can't leave his house because there is a hole in his head.

Having lived overseas and traveled extensively, I have met and worked with many people who have suffered under different plans of socialized medicine.

In a nutshell, you don't want socialized medicine if you have any capacity to read, research, and think critically; it has *never* worked.

The example given (thanks for the reference) is NOT just one which slipped through the cracks, it is a regularly occurring story.

Why do so many rich foreigners (and dictators) go abroad for their medical care if it's so good at home (except Castro - he flew in his own private surgeons which is in itself is a good statement about this matter).

As so many have said, politicians could ruin a good dream and (unfortunately) American politicians are only the tiniest step above any other pols (or the US economy is so big and dynamic that it takes longer to notice the corruption and graft)

Congress is one of the few organizations that has a *lower* approval rating than the president.

Do you really want to trust a government and its employees to make life or death decisions for you? Not me!!

HRC was just an specific example of the problems - I am almost sure that no one who has answered has read her proposal because even the committee couldn't understand it.

The only other thing I remember about her plan is that it would have been illegal (yes, illegal with fines and punishment) for a physician to run a private practice - how's that for American free enterprise, ingenuity, and bureaucracy??

Does the medical 'profession' include dedicated people as well as the hidebound? Are many not open to new ideas, and frequently part of the problem or scams? (YES).

Should we have a basic national insurance for catastrophic health care coverage? Probably (some would say that is SS).

This question has 'sussed out' many people's opinions and feelings (usually read as 'lack of thought') about the nanny state. Good question and some excellent answers.

Think about any time you've had to deal with any governmental agency (DMV perhaps?). Was is a simple, pleasant experience? Now just imagine what health care would be like in the government's hands. Keep Hillary Clinton out of Washington!

I personally know someone that broke his arm/wrist while visiting Canada. The doctor put on type of cast that was not used for over 30 years in the US - it was full plaster that shrinks/expands. We use lightweight plastic that does not shrink or expand and better for healing. When he got back here to the states his own doctor couldn't believe how bad it was casted.

There is enough problems with the government and helth care. I want to see something for those who make "too much" money to recieve aid from the government but not enough to afford regular health care - like so many unisured Americans out there.

People don't want socialized medicine, they want "free" medicine. What they don't understand is that nothing is free, they will be paying for it in higher taxes. What they don't understand is that they pay taxes every day, whether they are sick or not. What they don't understand is that if you eat right and exercise and wash your hands, you'll be forced to pay for people that smoke, drink, imitate Jackass stunts, eat Twinkies every day, drive 100 in a 35, don't wash their hands, have unprotected sex, and otherwise engage in unhealthy behavior.

What they don't understand is that socialized medicine is a scam by the politicians to buy votes and all it does is result in worse medical care and enslavement to the government.

Look what happened to Hillary's attempt to ruin our medical care. I do not think the Americans are ready for socialism despite electing Democrats. I think they now realize a war is better than Democrats in congress.

It's not a question of the quality on an objective scale.

It's a question of some people paying other people's bills, and of the government forcing some people to buy things they may not want.

In modified socialist / third way economies around the world, citizens are "entitled" to things that US citizens are not "entitled" to - but that only means that citizens of those countries are forced to buy things that US citizens have the choice to buy or not buy - - the individual tax rates in those countries are higher, especially if you include VAT and higher sales tax rates - - there's more income equality because they've eliminated the upper middle class, while we're rapidly growing ours.

Geez, all the guy has to do is go to a local hospital in SoCal and tell them he has no money, no ssn, is here illegally and won't pay. Instant medical care.

Anytime you include the governmet in a privataized industry, the result is going to be waitng and lots of red tape. We need to keep the medical profession private!!!!
