ssp can be used for any genus. This is an add-on to the genus stating that several species are included. For example, I could state that Homo ssp. were upright and walked on two legs. Therefore, I could be talking about the species Homo erectus, Homo sapiens sapiens, Homo sapiens neandertalis, etc..... So in your case, Clostridium spp. could include species such as C. difficile, C. botulinum, and C. perfringens. Of course, there are more species in the genus Clostridium, but these are some of the more medically significant.

In biology, a species is one of the basic units of biological classification ,A usable definition of the word "species" and reliable methods of identifying particular species are essential for stating and testing biological theories and for measuring biodiversity. A species consists of individual organisms which are very similar in appearance, anatomy, physiology and genetics due to having relatively recent common ancestors. Traditionally, multiple examples of a proposed species must be studied for unifying characters before it can be regarded as a species.

"spp." indicates that you are referring to all species within the aforementioned genus.
Conversely, "sp." refers to a single species of the genus, though not identifying it, perhaps because you are unable to, or that the individual species does not matter in the context of usage.
