In the late 1800s, the scientists of the day fretted about running out of oil and coal. There have been a percentage of scientists ever since that takes this gloom and doom approach to the future in spite of the fact that they are always proved wrong. Even assuming we reach a point that the supply dwindles. Costs will increase making other sources of energy such as nuclear and solar more viable. Technology will triumph as it always does and demonstrate that these chicken littles didn't really know what they were talking about.

Much more important theory states that no empire (definiton varies, but we, western world) fit the description, has lasted more tha 300 years. Check it it out and name one empire lasting longer than that.
The reason Olduvai theory can easily be disproved is because it is false (DOA)...

No, the Olduvai theory says than an industrial civilization cannot last more than 100 years. We have exceeded that number so the theory is disproved.

As the fossil fuels are limited and energy requirements increasing with rising populations there has to be reliance on a variety of energy sources like thermal,oil,hydro,non-conventional like wind and solar, atomicetc. We have also to strike a proper mix to have least damage to environment after seeing economic and social costs after proper analysis!
