While it does happen that the novice can walk in off the street and get a part, generally you work at it for months to years before landing a speaking role in a feature film. You need to study your craft, you need an agent (who by the way will tell you to take classes and that you need new headshots every 6-12 months), and you need to live in a n area where this is possible... Los Angeles where most feature films are cast and where most talent agents are located.
If you mean that you would like to be an extra, most likely you can do that fairly easily. If you live in LA, look up Central Casting or Bill Dance Casting. They handle most of the background talent. For this type of work, you always have to pay a fee upfront, that's just the way it goes. While they will not guarantee work, I'm telling you that everyone gets work unless they go hiding in the corner and never make any effort. You have to be over 18 to get in with these companies. If you're not, then check out Kids Background Talent.
Now on the other side of the coin, for mainstreem lead work, you never pay a fee. These companies I've mentioned above are not agents, they generally don't get you auditions for roles. This is for ther crowd of people they need to fill the scene at the park or people that will walk behind the principle actors while they have a conversation in the office or on the street. You may or may not ever see yourself in the final product, but you will work. Just call in regulary to see what's available.

Yeesh. Does it have to be a feature film? Sure it's happened, but if it's all or nothing at THIS point in your life, I got nothing for ya.
If it's just to start working on a project, any project, how about starting one on your own? Do you have friends with the same interests? Know of any scripts you'd love to film? Know anyone with a camera? Great! Get part of the script, do some casting, cast yourself in it, and find an AV junkie who can edit it for you and go for it. The best advice i can offer anyone trying to get started acting is this: If you can't find a project, start one! *Prove your commitment* Research it and be as confident as you can. So what if it's not a feature film? Along the way you'll meet people and get contacts and hopefully gain some new avenues into bigger and better things!

I don't think you are acting for the right reasons, first off. Why do you want to surprise your parents in a film? Do you want to make a film and surprise them with that or do you want to be in Spiderman 4 and take them to the premiere and say "Walla!"
If you don't have an established relative or friend, you aren't going to be able to just waltz into a movie career and even then you have to be somewhat talented to keep it going. There are probably, 2 million actors in America from Mike Meyers down to the kid selling I Love NYC shirts on the corner, the competition is unimaginable, the luck needed is insane and the road is hard and long and unfruitful for 99% of those who try it. So if you don't love to act, if you aren't toiling away in a community theater or in your friend's backyard digital shorts; if you aren't compelled to do it beyond anything else, don't do it, it's not a lalalalala kinda thing and once you get sucked in, it's hard to get back out.
That being said, you can try to get on one of the many reality shows, draw attention and camera time to yourself and try to parlee that into a career or you can go to an acting school or college and get a theater degree and then head out to NYC, LA or Chicago and jump in with the big fish, continually auditioning, taking meetings, etc. and you might, might, get something on Law and Order.
You don't sound like you're ready. Get a video camera, write something short and funny your family would like, film it on a weekend with some of your friends and then have a "premiere" party at your house. Boom, you're an actress and their surprised. Break a leg!

Do yourself a favor before you do anything. Take classes. Learn about the industry and perhaps do some stage work.
And honestly in order to have a bit, lead, or principal in a flim you need to live in L.A.
You can probably be an extra in your own home town if they are filming. However, if you are an extra you may never actually be seen on camera.

You can go to an open call (check local papers, internet, etc.)
or call your local film commission & get info. on doing extra work. You wont have a speaking part unless you're a featured extra- but it does pay you a set amount ($72.50 in my location) a day.
Or if you are very serious about acting you can take classes from an instructor, read up on the craft, get headshots, resume' & seek representation from an agencie
For a quick beginners read get Acting for Dummies from a library. This is easy to scan thorugh & get an idea of the basics.
Hope this helps.

I actually auditioned for a movie once, back in the 80's, a film called Liar's Moon. I found the ad in the employment section of the local paper, under "entertainment." I just walked in off the street.
I didn't get the part, but it was fun. I still see ads like that once in a while.

I think if you really want something you will get it.....................................
I am debating about acting too network talk to people that are actually in the business...........
And whatever you do...........donot listen to the negative people that tell you about the struggle and all the other actors out there!!! If you want it you will get it!!!
I am going to te NY Film School in NY
Try and review some acting studios where you can take a class in beginners to see if this is your passion that is what I plan to do........................
You never know always have a dream even if you perform in a play off broadway you are doing something that you like................as one actor told me follow your passions and if you love what you do things will blow up for you.................

Go to any and all casting calls. Malls and big-name bookstores or movie/music stores sometimes have these. The closer you live to a large city, the better off you'll be. Remember: never get a major make over or wear gobs of makeup. Look natural...it will make you feel more comfortable and confident, and confidence is what makes a star!

You should seriously gain experience. It's very important to get different experiences from different styles of acting. Try a community theatre. Build up a resume. It's not going to be easy if you don't have at least the tiniest bit of experience.

Judging from what garbage I see on TV and in the movies these last 4 decades, all you need to do is show up and look pretty or handsome. Absolutely no tallent required.
