That is far too much info to cover in a single question, after all many, many books have been written on the subject and I would suggest you get at least one good book before you try to start a salt tank. In the mean time here's a link to a site that offers excellent information on everything to do with salt tanks including set up of fish only tanks all the way to a full reef tank.

Hope that helps

The other 2 posts are absolutely correct!
The 3 most important thing to remember is water quality, water quality, water quality.

Setting up a salt water tank can take as little as a few weeks to a couple of months. The water needs to cycle and be tested prior to adding fish or corals. Fish and corals can cost in the range of $10-to hundreds of $'s. There are different types of filter systems and while some tanks maintain themselves fairly well, most require at least couple hours of attention every week. The larger the tank the easier the water quality is to maintain but the harder the upkeep as far as cleaning goes.

They are beautiful but you don't want to put a $100 fish in just to watch it die a short time later.
