I'd probably say "So you're telling me for what reason????" The only reason that should ever come up should be to thwart advances from the sex you are not interested in. I mean I don't openly tell everyone I am straight. So why is it necessary to say "I'm gay" or "I am an overachiever".."Hello my name is Brian and I am gay" I mean what is that? Now if you were my child and you were telling me because you want me to know. My reaction would be the same. I could not care less what the sexual preference of my kids, or family members are. I love them no matter what.

Totally hypothetical? You asking for someone, or for yourself, or because someone told you they were and you want to know how to react?
If someone (either close to me or someone I didn't really know) told me they were "gay", (Man or woman), I would Thank them for being honest with me, and depending on how the situation came up, I would be polite accordingly.
If it was a guy I asked out and he was gay, I would apologize and let him know that I still think him very attractive, he's gonna make some other man very happy.
If it was a woman asking me out, and I had to tell her no, I would tell her I am COMPLETELY flattered and altho many a failed relationships have tempted me to try a go at woman, its still not for me. Thank you though!!! You made my day!
If it was a friend, family member or colleague confiding in me, then I would Hug them, ask who else knows, if discretion is a must, and if there is anyone they are seeing, I am so excited to hear They're happy!

Great! as long as you know it sooner rather than later. There's nothing wrong with being gay. It's actually a GREAT thing with this damn over populated planet!
