I just had a m/c (D&C as well) a few weeks ago, so I've been on a roller coaster ride of emotions since then. My husband and I want to try again, however the doctor recommended we wait 3-6 months (emphasizing the 6 months). So my question is: Is it safe to take pre-natal vitamins for 3 to 6 months before even conceiving? I'm still taking them since the doctor said its okay for the iron, but I want to be sure I'm ready the next time we conceive (I've even thought of switching to the over-the-counter brand to save money during this time).

I don't know why the doctor told me to wait so long. I really don't agree with her (and I think she really hasn't had much experience...I think she's fairly new and is going by the textbooks). I'm glad I'm moving so I will find another doctor and ask again when it is safe to try again.

Since it's a vitamin I don't think it will hurt to take for that period of time. I am trying to conceive as well and my doctor told me to start taking the vitamin to get my body ready. I am currently taking an over the counter vitamin, generic brand and it was like $10 for like 120. I hope everything goes well and you achieve a healthy pregnancy in the future :)

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace in this difficult time.
As for your question-the iron in pre-natals is constipating for some people, but, if it's not bothering you, it's absolutely okay to continue to take them for the next few months as you heal physically and as you begin to ttc again. The pre-natals contain folic acid, and having a good store of folic acid before you become pregnant is important, as is folic acid during pregnancy. The folic acid in pre-natal vitamins helps to prevent neural tube defects, which can cause very serious and sometimes fatal complications for a baby.
Best of luck when you're ready to try again.

yes...youre actually supposed to be taking prenatal vitamins at least 3 months before you concieve. Iron will make you constipated if you get too much but nothing major. it is safe and better for your unborn child. Im wondering why your dr told you to wait so long. I gave birth to a stillborn daughter 2 months ago and we already got the go ahead to start trying. Usually drs recommend at least having 2 periods. by the way so sorry for your loss, i know how you feel.

I'm sorry for you loss. It is perfectly fine for you to continue taking prenatal vitamins. The best time to start them is before you conceive. Just don't take any other vitamins that contain iron at the same time. Best of luck to you.

Firstly, I'm so sorry for your loss. It is absolutely safe to continue taking the prenatals, and actually it's a good idea if you plan to conceive again. They say it's best to start taking prenatals at least 3 months prior to conceiving, so you should be in good shape.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I would stop taking the prenatals and take a regular multi-vitamin and folic acid.
Good luck!

Yes, it is fine to take them still. It will just give your body more of what it needs for when you do become pregnant again. Good luck.
