You don't say if you want a sport bike or a cruiser. This will be the first decision. I would probably start in the 500 to 750 cc range. I would go used. You should plan on driving your first bike for a year or so and then buy the bike you really want. For your first bike I would go Japanese (any of the major ones will be great as a first bike. You probably also want to take a motorcycle rider course. DA

go for a suzuki or kawasaki range of 550cc

First of all with your weight and size you are able to drive anything.

From what I understood you are not interested in racers nor heavy touring machines.

What remains are sport-touring, which is obviously between the 2 others and they are excellent bikes to get acquainted with motor bikes.
And to start with you should take a 600 – 750 cc not to heavy and not too much power.

For your first bike it would be smart to take an Asian bike, the reason is they have excellent handling, well balanced and good control. This helps you develop your skills and to find out what you like.
Such as:
Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, etc…

There are many bike types; I will give you a head start.

Off the roads
Semi- Off the roads
Touring
Sports touring
Sport racers
Racers

You have many different kind of bikes
American are powerful, but difficult handling
European is excellent cornering machines
Asian has perfect handling and controllable machines.

Good luck and bikes are fun, if you keep using common sense.

Take an approved course. They provide motorcycles for instructional use. Once you have learned to ride one of these smaller bikes, and had a chance to talk to the instructors, you will have a much better idea of what you want. You will get your best advice from someone you can touch. And you will know that they are qualified to give it.

For starters I would buy a dependable used import bike around the 250cc range motor size. Not too big, and manageable. Learn your skills on this and if you lay it down a few times its no big deal. Once you've gotten a year or two of good riding experience behind you, then go for a bigger nicer bike like a Harley. I cut my teeth on a 250cc Honda then moved up to a V45 Magna then on to a Harley.

Go to a bike shop and ask and sit on some of the bikes till you find one you like, also if you buy the bike from the shop some of them offer the class for free to get your license.

I would recommend Honda any day. I have a Kawasaki and its been good so far. I would recommend any Jap over anything else. But its really your decision. Since you did not mention if you want sport or cruisers here are some websites.

Honda.com
Kawasaki.com
Suzuki.com
Yamaha.com
Hd.com

and if you google you will find more.
