I know that with HO and N-scale you can use a "new" thing called DCC (Digital Command Control) that allows you to run 1-150 trains on the same layout !! I'm not sure if this is available in O-Scale with Lionel.

OH !! Just checked the Lionel website... they have something similar to DCC called TMCC (Train Master Command Control). http://www.lionel.com/ForTheHobbyist/Findex.cfm

There is also of course the OLD way of wiring your track in "blocks"... so that each controller powers a section of track, and you keep the trains on separate "blocks".

GOOD LUCK !!

You can buy newer O gauge locomotives with a control system that allows you to run more than one on the same track, but they are quite expensive. A cheaper way would be to separate the loops of track with insulated connectors into electrically isolated zones called "blocks." with a two-way toggle switch, you can switch the track power back and forth between two different transformers as the train moves from one electrically isolated block to the next. You need to stay on your toes, though, because if you can have a collision if you are not careful. Kalmbach publishing has a number of books on toy trains, and the one linked below is specifically on electrical wiring.
