That would be like tipping someone who works at McDonalds.

You don't tip because the item you're buying is expensive. You tip because either (a) you thought the server did an especially good job at serving you, and/or (b) you thought the server probably deserves more pay given the work that they do.
You have to decide for yourself whether either is the case at Starbucks. Don't hold your breath waiting for any company to raise employees' pay so that you don't have to tip. In the case of Starbucks, I assume the workers there get minimum wage, or close to it, and because I think minimum wage is ridiculously low for almost any work, I do tip there.
But I give bigger tips to people who work harder than that. For example, people who clean hotel rooms work very hard for very little pay, and deserve more than a dollar a day per room. (And no, I don't clean hotel rooms, never have, and don't know anyone who does.)

I don't usually tip at Starbucks, but sometimes they are so nice and polite that it makes me smile. I give them some change for that.
Are the employees at Starbucks where you live always so nice, or is it just a southern thing? Down here going to Starbucks has always been a pleasant experience

Yes I tip at Starbucks. They are always so busy running around and I know they don't make that much. I think you are right. Starbucks is making a fortune so they should pay their employees more.

i try to go to other coffee shops (i.e.; not corporate juggernauts), and i try to tip, despite being poor myself, reflective on the service i received (it's not a difficult job, but their are a lot of inept and/or ignorant people in the service industry). they don't make much, true, but that's why a lot of them have a second job. minimum wage is another antiquated notion (along with the electoral college) that america won't let go of. over half of the population is struggling to make end's meet, while big businesses get incentives for outsourcing. everyone i know under 35 years old has a second part-time job. why are we killing ourselves and not making a change in this so-called democratic society? why don't we have a voice anymore?

Well they do get paid well and what happened is they take the tips at the end of the week and divide them up to each employee giving them a percentage per the hours they worked. It is always nice to tip because they are making you your coffee/tea etc.. If you don't tip no big deal but whatever change (pennies, quarters etc..) you get back throw it in their jar. No harm done.

I don't tip in coffee shops. I tip waiters and that's all. It's like a booking fee when you buy tickets online...why do I need to do it? especially when the things are so damn expensive anyway. It's not my job to supply the employees of Starbucks with an addition to whatever rubbish wages they get. If they don't like the pay they should find somewhere that pays better, I'm not their employer, I'm not paying them.

You shouldn't tip more than some pocket change at places like that, unless they do a great job and make you feel welcome and all that. Unlike waiters who get paid below minimum wage b/c they are expected to get tips, Starbucks workers get paid a fair wage. Those tip jars on the counter actually annoy me to some extent.

The coffee isn't expensive? Where do you live cause I want to start going to your Starbucks!
Anyway- I rarely tip. If I pay with a five and get coins back then I'll dump them in the change pot. If the barista looks like shes having a crap day I'll throw a dollar in. Other then that no.

Technically in jobs such as starbucks, mc donalds etc you are not supposed to accept tips. It is part of their job and they get paid to do it. It is not like waiting tables when you make half of what minimum wage is and you depend on tips.

Tips are for service provided, if the coffee is brought to you etc., at a table.
