Are you in the US? Then the federal Family Medical Leave Act guarantees twelve weeks and ensures that your job will be there when you return (but only in companies with 50+ employees). Some companies may allow for more than that, depending on how family friendly they are.
However, be aware this does not guarantee paid leave. How your leave is taken is up to the company. Some may offer paid leave, but most do not. Some allow you to substitute sick and vacation time.

I don't know about the UK, but here in the US every company differs but I dont think you actually start getting paid for maternity leave, until you actually have the baby then the leave starts. I have 0 paid maternity leave because my work plance sucks!

Here in the US you typically get approximately 12 weeks total maternity leave. It starts whenever you want it to. The time starts running out as soon as you stop working - not when the baby is born. So if you decide to stop working at 36 weeks, you will have used up 4 weeks before baby is even here, and will have 8 weeks after baby is born.

In the uk it is 11 weeks before your baby is due. Then you are entitled to 6 weeks receiving 60% pay and the rest of your maternity pay will be £112.75 per week.

Companies do not have to allow for "maternity leave" and can have you work up to your date of delivery, unless you have a doctors note. Then they consider it disability leave and you may be entitled to pay through that.
They do have to allow 12 weeks for recovery post pardum but that is FMLA leave.
If your company is nice enough to have a seperate maternity leave ask them questions, are you going to be paid for it, will it take away time from your FMLA leave, will they let you take both a maternity leave beforehand and then the FMLA after?

I am entitled to the full 52 week, but only 39 of them will be paid - 6 weeks @ 90% wage and 33 weeks at SMP. I have worked for my company for 2 years now. Hope this helps....

15 weeks is when u can start the merternity leave at the earliest if u want to be intitled to maternity leave no matter what company it is u need to get the mat b form off of your midwife at your 24 week check up and give it to your employer it tells them when u r going to take your leave

11 weeks before the week in which your baby is due (weeks begin on Sundays in this case) - not 11 weeks to the day before the baby is due like my boss thought. Have you told the company your pregnant? If not when you hand in your MAT B1 they will inform you of the earliest date you can leave.

Federally, an employer with 50 or more employees must allow 12 weeks per year for leave of absence. Though they don't have to pay you or secure your position. They only have to offer you whatever position is available when you return and at the same pay you were making when you left.
