There are a few examples where democracy can thrive in Islamic states. Obviously Turkey is an example, although there are current challenges to that right now. Mauritania and Mali are two other countries you may want to research. They are both obviosuly developing but both have embraced democracy. Other than these three countries, however, you would be hard pressed to find any other working examples (Afghanistan is too early, imo, and we have no idea where it will end up).

Yes. The only criteria for leadership in an Islamic nation is a believe in Islam. A leader may be elected, or selected. Elections have been held in the Palestinian regions, as well as Indonesia, The Philippines, Malaysia, Algeria, Egypt, and Turkey. Islamics would welcome democracy because the Islamic point of view would always win

Yes. One example is Malaysia. They have a thriving democracy as well as a multicultural society. Do they have problems? Of course. Every country does. However I recently visited there for the first time in 20 years and the growth I saw was phenomenal.

Yes, Iran, Pakistan, Lebanon and Turkey are democracies. Other middle eastern countries have some democratic institutions such as elected parliaments, mayors or town councils, but are ruled by a monarch or a president-for-life.

Iraq proves that democracy cannot be forced on a nation, but it can develop within a country irrespective of what is the dominant religion.

As a Muslim, I find nothing in Islam that makes it incompatible with democracy.

Yes! But it must be held in check by a secular government like what you see happening in Turkey which is a member of NATO and is trying to get accepted into the EU.
