The original Robotech /Macross, followed by Gundam.

Ghost in the Shell is great, but it's about technology and consciousness in general, not just robots.

Project A-Ko had the funniest parody of robot/mecha anime.

3. The Patlabor Series = sticks more to a "real" notion of what robots might be in our human society. (though they are called "Labors").

2. The Gundam Series = Epic stories of war, love and peace in places like the space, the Earth and other other planets with warring troops or knights depicted as "Gundams". Colossal battles too. One of the pillars of mecha anime.

1. Macross = a valkyrie to a gerwalk then to a battroid (nice transforming concept). I chose this one as my best robot anime (though Gundam isnt that bad a choice too) because this is the one vivid in my mind as I recall my younger years of watching anime. Played the NES macross game also. Its when you remember Minmei dishing out cheesy love songs (English translated songs) but you still enjoy it and kinda remember the tune..(i.e. "To be in love.. lalalalalalala) lol (best love triangle concept in anime too)

The Transformers
Goldar & Meiko ( I don't know if anyone can remember that one as far back as 1978-79. It was one of the first robot shows that took off right after the Godzilla Craze. It was an earlier version of Power Rangers.

for me, the best is GUNDAM WING.. The story line is really exceptional.. I don't like the newer series like GSD and GS much.. Gw, is soo good.. the pilots sticked and know the importance of their mission, on the other hand GS, I don't know how a war will end if there is no battle.. cause not all people think alike right? and if the lead male kira? don't like to fight, then why did he fight? oh well.. it's none of my business anyway.. GUNDAM WING is the best..

Well I'm not really into mecha but I they say that Gundam Seed Destiny is the best. And frankly, I've been wanting to watch it myself. I'm really on to the shoujo type anime but they say that it's really good so I'll give it a try.^^

I don't think transformers is an anime but If it isn't I have to say Gundam Wing no other has ever been as good.
